An eligibility problem for a Sisters student cost the Lady Outlaws basketball program its stellar record this season - and it's led to a tightening of procedures and protocols by new athletic director, Tim Roth. One of the lesser-known hazards of snow country travel is the danger posed by tree wells. Tree wells form around the bases of evergreen trees when overhanging limbs interfere with the natural deposition of falling snow, and the resulting cavities can be deadly. When a uniform blanket of snow is disrupted by tree limbs, the opening created around the tree trunk can partially fill with loose, unconsolidated snow. A resident of Tollgate reported seeing a cougar on February 6 near the large lawn area at Tollgate. Tollgate staff sent out an email alert to residents noting the sighting and urging residents to "keep a watchful eye on your kids and pets." A probable deer cougar-kill was also found in a yard, and tracks were found in the area. Cougars move through large territories seeking deer, which are their primary prey. The reputation of the school district was one of the primary reasons we relocated to Sisters rather than any other place in Oregon, and we have not been disappointed. Senior Eli Harrison will soon fulfill his childhood dream of playing college basketball. In the fall Harrison will head back east to play basketball for Dartmouth College, a prestigious Division 1 university in the Ivy League. Dartmouth is a private Ivy League university located in Hanover, New Hampshire. The Sisters Park & Recreation District's Adult Americana Project class began January 24, and students are having a blast. At capacity, there are 15 students in the class held at Sisters Art Works. The music-filled classroom is full of eager, aspiring musicians who have been waiting for their chance to experience what the students at Sisters High School have been enjoying for years. The Outlaws made a big splash at the 2013 District Championships last week. Led by first-year coach Brittany Baldessari, the Outlaws broke four school records, advanced 16 of 20 swimmers to finals, and took home the district title for the girls. The girls 200-yard medley relay (Katie Stewart, Karly Vial, Mary Stewart, Emily Christen) took second place, smashing the previous school record of 2:02.27 with a time of 1:58.53. While Sisters student-athletes have been working on afterschool drills and practices, high school band members have had their own afterschool workouts, rehearsing in percussion ensembles, jazz combos and duets and quartets. Hoodoo Ski Area celebrated its 32nd Winter Carnival on Saturday. Marking the middle of the winter ski season, Hoodoo once again saluted the season with a full day of activities and recreation. Injuries and ineligibility have taken their toll on the boys' basketball team. This past week the Outlaws dropped to just two seniors in their line-up compared to six that they started with. Sisters lost both their games; a 49-36 loss at home to Sweet Home (SH) on Tuesday, February 5, and a 39-31 loss to the Tigers at Junction City (JC) three days later. The Lady Outlaws dominated the court from start to finish to post a 74-30 victory over Sweet Home (SH) at home on Tuesday, February 5. Three days later Sisters dropped their game against Junction City (JC) with a final score of 38-33. The Sisters Outlaws alpine ski team took fourth place in both the boys and girls giant slalom races in the Bend Bachelor Butte Bash alpine ski event on Saturday. The Bend High team swept 1st place in both boys and girls races, with Summit taking 2nd place. Ten-year-old Dylan Vantress of Sisters won the coveted Salem Indoor Speedway Quarter Midget Cage Kart Cup over the weekend of February 2-3. Dylan won all three heat races on Saturday, which gave him a front-row start for the main event on Sunday, February 3. He led all 20 laps in the main event, running a flawless race and lapping his competition for the win. The Quarter Midget Cage Karts run on a 1/10-mile indoor track. Sisters High School art students continued the tradition of high-level performance at the Central Oregon Scholastic Art Awards competition at the Pinckney Center at Central Oregon Community College. The Outlaws wrestling squad posted a 43-16 win over the Ridgeview junior varsity on Thursday, February 7. Sisters took nine wrestlers to the meet and recorded eight wins of the 11 matches wrestled, six of which were pins. Clayton Darst and Mark Fish both won two matches. Long-time Sisters Country residents Bill and Nancie Carmichael traveled to Costa Mesa, California, last week to accept a Career Achievement Award from Vanguard University. The Sisters City Council in their Thursday workshop put finishing touches on an agreement with Economic Development for Central Oregon (EDCO) to house the Sisters economic development manager's position, currently held by Patty Cordoni. Barring a last-minute reprieve, Ky Karnecki, owner of the Wild Mountain mushroom and jerky stand on the corner of Locust Street and Highway 20, will have to move his structure off its leased property by the end of February. The semi-permanent status of the temporary stand became the focus of controversy within city planning circles for more than a year. The new Sisters City Council took office on January 10 and began implementing its goals for the coming year. Early priorities included keeping the Sisters Recycle Center open seven days a week, moving management of the city's economic development manager position to Economic Development for Central Oregon (EDCO) and expanding the city's enterprise zone to encompass more areas of the city.
