Many Sisters area residents take a major risk every day. They go without health insurance coverage. They’re some of the estimated 45 million Americans who get little or no medical care because they cannot afford health insurance. That number rose in recent years, mostly due to a loss of coverage by employers. With the number of small employers in Sisters and the numerous part-time and seasonal jobs, this community has a large share of uncovered families. People either go without or struggle to pay for an insurance policy on t... Full story

A series of unforced errors on the hard, icy slopes of Mt. Bachelor on Saturday, February 12, left the Sisters High School girls ski racers alone in third place, claiming the third and last team transfer to the State Championship. After bobbles and falls the Sisters girls still managed to place three in the top 12, but that wasn’t good enough to improve their league position. First-run mishaps, with three of the top five girls falling, left the girls well behind the Bend a... Full story

On a 3 to 2 vote, the Sisters School Board Monday night decided to remodel its middle school so that fifth grade students can be moved there, if necessary, in the fall of 2006. There was no debate over the basic question of moving the fifth graders. But it took nearly an hour’s friendly debate to reach a conclusion on timing. Waiting until the 2006-07 school year, as recommended by Superintendent Ted Thonstad, ultimately prevailed with the support of Board Chairman Glen Lasken and members Eric Dolson and Tom Coffield. Don’t watch these movies with your kids. Even if they’re grown-ups. No one suggests these films as favorite romances. They are better described as anti-romances. Although beautifully made (most are on “The New York Times Top 1,000 List” and won many awards worldwide), they are not pretty. They are about sex and even love as power. In Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Last Tango in Paris” (1972) Jeanne (Maria Schneider), a 20-year-old, beautiful Parisienne, meets Paul (Marlon Brando), a 45-year-old American, whose wife just killed h... To the Editor: There were a couple of factual errors in the February 9 article regarding the sale of the Sisters Ranger District Administrative Site (“Ranger District sale could start this summer”). These were likely due to a failure on my part to accurately communicate to Jim Fisher about a pretty complex process. The property will not be offered for sale this year. We do intend to make a decision on what to sell and what to keep by this fall. But there is considerable work – seeking formal approval from Congress to sell... Full story
