Developers of a proposed business park at the north edge of Sisters are asking state land use officials to allow Sisters voters to decide on whether their property can be annexed to the city. Barclay Meadows Business Park, LLC asked the Sisters City Council Thursday, February 11, to be placed on the May 18 ballot for a vote that would allow the property to be annexed once it is brought within the city's Urban Growth Boundary. Efforts to install a traffic light installed at the intersection of Highway 20 and Camp Polk/Locust Street have come to a stop - at least for a couple of years. The City of Sisters will not try to get a light included in the Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP), according to Mayor Steve Wilson. Oregon Senator Gordon Smith introduced a bill to Congress on Thursday, February 11, that would convey 240 acres of U.S. Forest Service land to the City of Sisters for wastewater treatment and disposal. Passage of the legislation, co-sponsored by Senator Ron Wyden, would transfer ownership of the land known as "Section 9" to the City of Sisters at no cost to the city, other than that of preparing an environmental assessment of the site. The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce has formed a committee on economic development. According to chamber manager Mardyth Peterson, the move is designed to complement the efforts of the Sisters Community Action Team (CAT) to promote the economic growth and stability of the Sisters area. Camp Sherman area residents can feel a little more secure knowing there are more firefighters available in an emergency. The ranks of volunteer firefighters at the Camp Sherman station of the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District have swelled to 10 dedicated individuals. More are needed. Gene Lorenz, who worked with the Portland Fire Department for 30 years before moving to Camp Sherman, is spearheading new efforts to energize the volunteer group. I strongly feel that the money that was made from the sale of the old bowling alley, should be used to build a pool or a recreation center. Larry Starling Dunn was arrested at Crooked River Ranch on Saturday, February 13, and charged with the attempted murder of his wife. Dunn, 49, has been a police patrol officer at Black Butte Ranch since August 3, 1997. He was placed on administrative leave following the incident, according to Black Butte Police Chief Hank Fegette.
