  • Chorale director donates scholarship funds

    Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD) has received a $4,300 donation from Irene Liden, director of Sisters High Desert Chorale. The funds are dedicated to the scholarship program. Liden, a retired professional opera singer, is an enthusiastic walker and hiker who also volunteers as the director of her church choir along with the chorale.     The Sisters High School commons was converted into a maze of educational experiments, demonstrations and displays on Saturday, for the fourth annual Sisters Science Fair.   • City weighing loan fund to spark job growth

    The Sisters City Council is considering a plan to initiate a new Forgivable Loan Fund, in an attempt to attract new businesses and/or promote job creation, retention and expansion in Sisters. They discussed the idea at their February 18 workshop. Disbursements from the fund may take the form of low-interest loans, but all loans have to be tied directly to creation or retention of jobs in Sisters. If the jobs that were created still exist in three years, the loan is forgiven.... Full story

  • Swimmers set new school records

    Sisters took six swimmers to state, which was held at Mt. Hood Community College on Friday and Saturday, February 19-20. The girls finished seventh. In prelims on Friday, the girls established two new school records, and set four personal bests. Mary Stewart came in third in the 50-yard freestyle, and qualified for finals the next day. Stewart set a new school record with a time of 24.93. Emily Christen took seventh with a career-best of 25.74, and made first-alternate for the finals.     The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce annual meeting and awards ceremony will be held on March 6. This year's theme is "A Taste of Sisters," celebrating Sisters-area restaurants. The annual meeting and awards ceremony will include a full no-host bar and heavy hors d'oeuvres. Tickets for the event are $35 each or a table of eight for $280.     Sisters High School equestrians competed well at their first Oregon High School Equestrian Team (OHSET) on the weekend.     Jean Ann Engstrom passed away on Sunday, February 15, of natural causes, surrounded by her family who loved her dearly. She was 86 years old. Jean was the only child of Richard and Mildred Martin, and was born in Orange, NJ. She graduated from Newark State Teachers College and taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
