    Recreation programs in Sisters have as much riding on the outcome of the March 12 annexation vote as the school district does. SOAR (Sisters Organization for Activities and Recreation) plans to build a gym, a martial arts/dance studio, teen center and ball fields on 15 acres out of the 100 acres the school district seeks to annex into the city for new high school site.   • School auditorium third largest in region

    The proposed 920-seat Sisters High School auditorium would be the third largest performance theater in Central Oregon. It would be the second largest high school auditorium in the region. The Deschutes County Fairgrounds offers the largest seating capacity. The fairgrounds Event Center is by far the largest venue in the area, seating 4,000 people in fixed seats, with the ability to handle 3,000 more in floor seating.   • Sisters man indicted on sex abuse charges

    Terry Lynn Taylor of Sisters has been indicted on sex abuse charges by a Deschutes County Grand Jury. Taylor turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday, February 19, and was released on $50,000 bail. The indictment lists nine felony counts of first and second degree sexual abuse; six misdemeanor counts of furnishing obscene materials to minors; and 22 misdemeanor counts of third degree sexual abuse.   • SCID intends to pipe Fryrear irrigation ditch

    The Fryrear ditch will be piped next year. The Fryrear ditch, an irrigation canal serving 10 farms in the Cloverdale area, will be piped. Running the water in a pipe instead of an open canal will save approximately three cubic feet per second, or 1,347 gallons of water per minute, according to Marc Thalacker, manager of the Squaw Creek Irrigation District.   • Suspect sought in assault

    Sheriff's deputies are looking for a suspect in a domestic assault that allegedly occurred at 18135 Plainview Road on Sunday night, February 24. According to sheriff's office reports, Douglas Paul McDonald fled the scene of a reported physical domestic dispute. Deputies spotted McDonald's red Nissan leaving the scene. Deputies pursued McDonald, who abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot in the area of Dayton Road. Deputies used canine units to search the area, but were unable to find McDonald.   • Family Dance Night will be held March 8

    Parents and teachers will host a Family Dance Night at Sisters Elementary School Commons on Friday, March 8. The event, which runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m., is free; however, donations of canned food for the Kiwanis Food Bank will be accepted. Entire families (parents are required to accompany their children) are invited to enjoy an evening together dancing and listening to the music of Golden Public. Refreshments will be provided.     The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce is developing a trained team of volunteers to assist in various chamber and community projects. The team will consist of 12 members.     Andy Duran's job just got easier -- and cleaner and faster.... Andy Duran is making quick work of his garbage route on Tuesdays these days. The City of Sisters has purchased a 17-yard, 1987 Lodal garbage truck with an automated arm that picks up and dumps garbage containers.     Sisters will be filled with unique art and homegrown music on Friday, March 1, during the Painted Strings art stroll. The Sisters Folk Festival and the Americana Project, a music education project of the Sisters School District, purchased 24 old acoustic guitars.   • SOAR plans recreation complex in Sisters

    SOAR plans to build a complex of ballfields and a gym/teen center/martial arts studio on 15 acres dedicated to the organization by the Sisters School District. According to SOAR director Tom Coffield, the facilities will be funded solely through grants and donations. Coffield said that a SOAR gym will help the organization stage its basketball tournaments, which now bring hundreds of youth players to Sisters.
