A Sisters woman died early Saturday morning after quickly consuming a large amount of hard liquor. • Letters to the Editor

    Updated Feb 27, 1996

To the Editor: I attended an open house in the new activity center for SOAR and the office of the Family Access Network Coordinator Thursday, February 22. What an exciting place. I would like to publicly thank Tom Coffield and Theresa Slavkovsky for the energy and enthusiasm they bring to this center. It is obvious that its success is due to great structure in the programs and follow through in activities proposed. I know where to start in planning my children's idle time this summer (SOAR 549-2091). Good job people.... Full story

  • The tragic meal

    Melissa Ward|Updated Feb 27, 1996

I write in my cookbooks. The exuberant star is the finest possible accolade. "Approved by children" is another high success notation. It happens to be written on a light and frivolous chocolate mousse which, once made, I must defend with an old shoe until the proper serving time has arrived. Somebody's birthday and the parenthetical date is a lovely message for a person of particularly sappy sentiments to find and find again and again. But there are, burning in my brain and carved into the pages of some of my culinary... Full story

  • Sisters sign rules hard to enforce

    Jim Hollon|Updated Feb 27, 1996

Some Sisters businesses seem to be showing anarchistic disregard for the city's sign ordinance. Getting businesses to comply with the ordinance has proved frustrating for City Planning Director Neil Thompson. "I don't want to make any secret of the fact that enforcement (of the sign ordinance) is one of the most distasteful elements of my job," Thompson told the Sisters Urban Area Planning Commission in their Wednesday, February 21 meeting. The sign ordinance attempts to provide an enforcement tool for maintaining an 1880s... Full story

    Jim Cornelius|Updated Feb 27, 1996

Tommy Vaughn Honea of Sisters was sentenced February 20 to 18 months in prison and five years of post-prison supervision (less time served) on a charge of third-degree rape. Honea, 25, pleaded guilty to the charge on October 4, 1995. The rape charge stemmed from a May 7, 1995 incident in which Honea had sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old girl who allegedly had passed out at his apartment in Sisters. Honea was subsequently arrested after authorities found him in violation... Full story

  • Superintendent candidates face the Sisters community

    Jim Cornelius|Updated Feb 27, 1996

The two finalists in the superintendent search faced off with parents, staff and community members Sunday, February 25, in school board-sponsored forum at Sisters Middle/High School. Al Butler of Clio, Michigan, and Steve Swisher of Cottage Grove, Oregon, held forth for over three hours Sunday, fielding questions -- and asking a few of their own -- of some 30 people who turned out to meet them. Butler, who has been Clio's superintendent for the past 10 years said that his... Full story

  • Icy Suttle Lake curve to be defrosted

    Richard Ward|Updated Feb 27, 1996

A timber harvest on Highway 20 near The Jack Lake Junction just east of Suttle Lake will reduce ice and snow build-up on the dangerous curve. The North Slope Timber Sale was sold February 6 to Curtis Wicks Contracting of LaPine for $90.25 per hundred cubic feet of timber for the 3,450 cubic feet of timber in the sale. The advertised minimum bid was $58.95 per hundred cubic feet. Four bidders competed for the timber sale. The harvest must be completed by June 30, 1996.
