  • Ugandan missionary to visit Sisters

    Dr. Valery Shean, a veterinarian missionary living in Uganda, will be in Sisters for some speaking presentations on March 7-8. “Dr. Val,” as she is affectionately known by the people of Uganda, has served with Christian Veterinary Missions in East Africa for nearly 15 years. She will visit a women’s Bible study at Three Sisters Fellowship on Tuesday March 7, from 9 to 11 a.m. She will focus on the work she has done with women and their families in Uganda.   • SOAR has board and budget openings

    The SOAR Recreation District Board of Directors is looking for district residents to serve on the Board of Directors or on the budget committee. The SOAR Recreation District is governed by five elected board members. Position #3 on the Board is vacant. John Bushnell was elected to the board in May 2005 and is unable to complete his term due to other civic responsibilities.   • Nicholas “Nick” Adam Santiago

    Nick Santiago, formerly of Sisters, died on February 23, 2006. He was 20. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 4, at 11 a.m. at the Sisters High School auditorium. He was born in Oregon City on October 14, 1985. He graduated from Sisters High School and entered the United States Air Force.   • Shirley J. Smith

    Shirley J. Smith of Sisters died February 16, after a seven-month bout with cancer. She was 70. Ms. Smith was born August 13, 1935 in Dallas, to Alfred and Evelyn (Coon) Powell. She married Ralph Duncan in 1950. They later divorced. She lived in Salem most of her life. She worked at Vern’s Cafe in Salem for 10 years. In 1986 she moved to Independence, where she opened up a housekeeping business, Shirley’s Housecleaning Service, which she operated for 17 years before retiring in 2003.   • School board fires up tobacco debate

    A new district policy to create a “tobacco-free environment” produced brief but unexpected debate at the last meeting of the Sisters School Board on February 13. The policy was ultimately adopted on a 3-2 vote. The new policy replaces one that essentially has only prevented tobacco use on district property.   • CIM attainment drops at Sisters High

    The proportion of Oregon high school graduates earning a Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM, pronounced “sim”) rose to 37 percent in 2005, compared with 33 percent the year before. The proportion at Sisters High School dropped to 59 percent from 68 percent in 2004.
