    The battle over resort development in the Metolius Basin intensified last week with a barrage of new legislation and agency action aimed at restricting large scale development in the area. The Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD) released a draft of its Area of Critical State Concern (ACSC) designation that would effectively kill both proposed developments in the Metolius Basin area.   • Sisters debates enterprise zone

    Sisters has started weighing the pros and cons of becoming part of an "enterprise zone" designed to attract business to the area. The Sisters City Council held a public workshop for the 20 Sisters "taxing districts" on Thursday, February 26 at City Hall. Approximately 25 people attended the one-hour session, a mix of taxing district representatives and interested members of the community.   • Schools sharpening the budget knife

    Sisters School District will start sharpening the knife they will need to wield on their budget for next year in a meeting on Thursday night. The district's Budget Reduction Advisory Committee will meet at 6 p.m. at the School District Administration Building. The March 5 meeting is the first of three meetings the committee will conduct to sound out public opinion on where and how the district should cut to meet an anticipated shortfall in state funding.     The Sisters High School Mock Trial team staged a surprising upset over Summit to win the 2009 Central Oregon Mock Trial competition held at the Deschutes County Courthouse in Bend on Saturday, February 28. After competing against both the Summit "A" and "B" teams, Sisters faced Summit "A" a final time to clinch the competition.     To the Editor: The new Sisters Post Office is now open for business at 694 N. Larch St. The window hours remain the same: from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. We thank all our customers for their patience during this move.   • ATVs damage local trails

    Several four-wheel ATVs caused heavy damage to a one-mile section of the Peterson Ridge Trail sometime late Friday or early Saturday. The damage was to a new single track trail that was recently constructed as part of the Peterson Ridge Mountain Bike Trail expansion approved by the Forest Service last April.     The Sisters girls basketball team suffered a disappointing 46-33 loss at Junction City (JC) in the first round of the district playoffs on Thursday, February 26. Susan Ruettgers suffered an injury to her ankle and was not be able to play in the big game. It was a tied ballgame at 0-0 for over the first three minutes of play, and then JC hit their shot to take a 2-0 lead.     Outlaw wrestlers Nick Head, Kody Johns and Thomas Schantz competed in the State 4A wrestling championships Thursday through Saturday, February 26-28 at the Coliseum in Portland. On Thursday, all three wrestlers went undefeated. Head (135 pounds) defeated Patrick Ryan of Taft 9-3. Johns pinned Tim Frafahl of Brookings-Harbor with one second left in the match.     Ruth Geneveive (Reed) Rowe was born in Pueblo, Colorado on July 14, 1918, to Thomas Daniel Reed and Ruth (Wilkenson) Reed. She married Ray Rowe in Westcliff, Colorado on December 30, 1935. They started their married life in the mountains of Colorado. They made their home in Colorado until 1955 when they moved their family to Oregon. In 1958 they settled in Sisters.
