  • Arson sparks blaze in canyon

    Sheriff's deputies arrested an eight-year-old boy on a charge of first degree arson after he allegedly set a fire in Squaw Creek Canyon on Monday, June 4. The blaze started at the bottom of Stardust Lane below the Sno Cap subdivision and spread up the canyon walls. According to Deschutes County Sheriff's Office reports, the fire burned 2.5 to 3 acres before it was knocked down.     Sisters rider Johnny Hammack in the chutes at the Calgary Stampede. The Sisters Rodeo remains the saddle bronc rider's favorite. The last time The Nugget caught up with Sisters native Johnny Hammack, he was getting ready for the saddle bronc competition at the Calgary Stampede.   • Land Trust dedicates new Camp Polk site

    More than 100 people braved cold, strong winds last Friday, June 1, to show their support for one of the Deschutes Basin Land Trust's biggest successes. The Trust, which works to protect key land areas in Central Oregon, formally dedicated its new Camp Polk site before an enthusiastic crowd of community-minded citizens.   • Board delays repair contract

    The Sisters School Board has delayed awarding a contract to repair Sisters High School, which has suffered severe water damage since it opened in 1993. The board decided on June 4 to seek the advice of attorney Neil Bryant on the bidding process. There were a total of five bids on the project: Kirby Nagelhout, $460,000; S.M. Anderson, $558,000; G.J.   • Fire fair educates Sisters community

    Firefighters staged an extrication demonstration at the Fire Fair on Saturday, June 2. Sisters area firefighters pried open a wrecked car, showed off new equipment and entertained youngsters at the third annual Fire and Safety Fair held Saturday, June 2, in the Village Green. Representatives from various city and county agencies were on hand to educate the public and demonstrate some of the equipment they use in the field.     Gil Ticoulat has seen 57 years of the cattle business. Come June each year, cowboy hats and boots pop up all over Sisters like tumbleweeds on the prairie.   • Sewer project hits cash crunch

    The effluent is flowing just like it should through Sisters' new sewer system. Cash flow is another matter. The project is $402,496 short of cash to complete the hook-ups of the commercial core and residential areas. However, city officials say the cash flow problem won't delay the project.     This doe charged Squawback Woods resident Jim Smith and his dog on Thursday, June 7. She was probably protecting her fawn.   • Sisters Sheriff's calls

    - Deputies were called to respond to a physical altercation in progress. It turns out a man had slapped a teenage boy he had taken in after finding that the boy had stolen a $200 check from the man, forged a signature and cashed it.
