The Kiwanis Club of Sisters recently presented its Everyday Hero Award to the Sisters Garden Club. The award is presented to a person or organization in the community that has gone “above and beyond.” The efforts of more than 70 members are enjoyed by residents and tourists as they travel through Sisters. The Sisters Garden Club was started in 1988 by Claudia Grooney, Barbara Warren and Mike Woosley. Nearly 150 people showed up to wield shovels as patrons broke ground for the new Sisters Library last Saturday in a festive on-site ceremony held under sunny skies. Statewide equalization of school funding has been the bane of some affluent Oregon school districts. But the experience of the High Desert Education Service District illustrates the good side of equalization. Based in Redmond, the High Desert ESD encompasses Crook and Deschutes counties. Its superintendent, Dennis Dempsey, is a former Sisters High School principal. Mariel Stones of Sisters was spotlighted by the Unitus Community Credit Union as the member who has been with the Credit Union the longest. The Credit Union was begun in 1937 — as Oregon Telephone Employees Credit Union — and Mariel Stones joined that same year, on July 28. She has been a member for over 67 years. Mariel married James Grant Stones, one of the Credit Union’s charter members, in 1935. This year the annual Memorial Day Ceremony on May 30 is being moved to the Village Green from Camp Polk Cemetery. The decision was made by the Sisters American Legion and The Veterans of Foreign Wars to allow easier access and increased capacity for those wishing to attend. The event has become an important Sisters tradition as veterans and their families acknowledge the fallen of American wars. Zach Jones of Sisters powered his pinewood derby car to a 10th-place overall finish in The Fremont District Cub Scout Pinewood Derby at the Bend River Mall on Saturday, February 26. The 70 racers over the 30-second downhill course were often separated by only hundredths and even thousandths of a second. Local Cub Scouts have been making bluebird boxes as a fund-raising project for the local Troop 139. The boxes are hand-made to order by the scouts and are useful for providing homes for feathred friends. Last year, Troop 139filled orders for 200 bird boxes.
