  • Food stand saga has more twists

    Updated Mar 27, 2012

The saga of the Wild Mountain food stand at the east end of Sisters continues to unfold with a variety of unexpected twists. The Sisters planning commission did not support owner Ky Karnecki's request for a development code revision that would allow temporary structures to remain on-site year-round. At their meeting last Thursday, the Sisters City Council appeared to back the planning commission, but a procedural issue postponed final action to the April 12 meeting (see related story, page 5). In January, the Sisters City... Full story

  • Glenn Miller is Rodeo Grand Marshal

    Bonnie Malone|Updated Mar 27, 2012

Growing up in Goshen, Indiana, Glenn Miller raced cars and "dragged the gut," a long stretch from the lifestyle he adopted in Sisters. From cars to rodeo, the President of Sisters Rodeo for the last fourteen years has invested so much of his life in Sisters Rodeo that the organization chose him Grand Marshal of the 2012 rodeo parade. The announcement was received enthusiastically by 125 people at the March 13 meeting. The selection honors a man who many consider to be the... Full story

  • First responders feel stress of tragedy

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Mar 27, 2012

Firefighters and police often see people in the most dire straits, in the midst of catastrophic loss and pain and fear. When unspeakable tragedy can be a part of any day on the job, it takes its toll. "It wears them out," says Chaplain Jim Crowley. Crowley led a debriefing of personnel who responded to a horrific head-on collision on Highway 20 earlier this month, which took the lives of two men and left a woman in critical condition and fighting for her life. The Critical... Full story

  • Wild weather marks transition to spring

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Mar 27, 2012

Mother Nature keeps wrong-footing Sisters Country. No sooner do we get used to temperatures in the 50s and clear blue skies - those glorious hints of balmy days to come - than she throws a winter storm our way, complete with car wrecks and highway closures. The Sisters Ranger District recorded some 4.5 inches of snow on Wednesday and Thursday of last week, and the snowfall was much heavier in the mountains. So heavy, in fact, that snow slides closed Highway 20 in... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 03/28/12

    Updated Mar 27, 2012

To the Editor: I'm sure many of us can agree that the killing of these magnificent animals is nothing to cheer about, and that it's time to stop attracting cougars to our neighborhoods by feeding their prey. Over the last few months we have had a turkey taken by a cat just outside our side gate and a deer was killed at a neighbors' house. Most will also remember the injured deer from last year that was finally consumed by more than one cougar off of Barclay Drive, the horse that was attacked in Tollgate, and countless other... Full story

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Mar 27, 2012

Sandy McDonald has been in the thick of the action as Sisters Library moved from a tiny little cubbyhole to nice, if quaint, facility to a large, modern facility. She's seen technology change the very function of a library. And she's enjoyed it all. McDonald marked 30 years working at Sisters Library this month. She started in the "little brown building" now behind the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center, providing relief for librarian Peg Bermel. That transitione... Full story
