The Sisters School District has cited Sisters area resident Keith Akers for failing to keep his grandduaghter in school. The unprecedented move, probably the first such action taken in Central Oregon, is the district's use of a law enacted in 1993 allowing local schools to enforce compulsory education requirements. Akers is registered as the guardian of his granddaughter, who should be a sophomore at Sisters High School. The girl has not attended classes since about the... Full story
Two wrecks in two days on Highway 20 four miles east of Sisters last week left drivers shaken but uninjured. The first accident occurred on March 26 when Tamara Prinzing, 32, of Tumalo, fell asleep while driving her Chevrolet Suburban toward Bend near Harrington Loop Road. Prinzing's vehicle drifted into the westbound lane, forcing Carla Shute, 36, of Salem, to drive her Honda Accord off the road and into a tree. Airbags deployed, preventing injury, according to a deputy on the scene. Prinzing said she woke suddenly, and... Full story
Twenty-four thousand cubic feet of fire-killed timber is scheduled for harvest from the Pole Creek Burn west of Sisters. The Sisters Ranger District recently announced its intention to salvage trees from the 18-acre burn, which consumed forest "with unusual intensity" in June 1997, according to Forest Service reports. Reforestation of the charred site will follow the harvest. The intensity and early-season occurrence of the blaze caused a unique phenomenon that may have spared larger trees from the saw blades. After two nights, the group left for Monte Verde, which is 5,000 feet above sea level and butts up to a natural reserve. Here the group had their... Full story
* * * Editorial... It's time for the Sisters Sewer Focus Group to call it a day. The poorly-led effort is a waste of time and money. On March 23, HGE engineer Dick Nored explained the project. A week later on March 30, paid facilitator Vergie Ries numbed citizens with a laborious trudge through Nored's presentation, reading Nored's notes - which she had copied and handed out - from a meeting which many had attended. The first hour of the March 30 meeting was a waste of time. Ries doesn't listen well. When Barbara Butler... Full story
For more than a year, the Hap Taylor & Sons construction company has been hauling gravel out of a surface mine five miles west of Sisters. When that mine was first proposed, it drew angry opposition from Sisters-area residents, who forecast choking dust, noise and highway carnage from gravel trucks. The mine was the focus of intense controversy as two groups of Sisters-area residents fought to stop the operation before it started. The fight ended in January, 1997, after two days of mediation talks allayed the most pressing... Full story
