    Charlie Kanzig|Updated Apr 3, 2018

Tate Metcalf's mission and vision in operating Sisters Athletic Club did not include striving to win awards for the business. However, thanks to the club's commitment to making a difference in the community, SAC won the prestigious IHRSA Outstanding Community Service Award for 2018. IHRSA (International Health Racquet and Sports Club Association) received a nomination from Sisters resident Josh Nordell in 2017 and Metcalf was notified on November 27 that SAC had been chosen... Full story

    Jodi Schneider, Correspondent|Updated Apr 3, 2018

Creekside Park was dressed to its best in sparkling colors of the rainbow on Sunday, with 6,000 shiny plastic eggs "hidden" on the lawn, in pine needles, behind trees, bushes and some out-of-the-way nooks and crannies for hundreds of young treasure hunters to seek. Earlier on Easter morning, Sisters-Camp Sherman and Cloverdale fire department volunteers divided the park up into four areas by age from infant to 11, scattering the brightly colored eggs for the annual Sisters... Full story

  • Rising to the level of middle schoolers

    Updated Apr 3, 2018

When my daughter was in middle school, she would take umbrage when I said that politicians or others engaged in public discourse were "acting like middle schoolers." "Dad," she would say, "we don't act like that." Fair enough. So, let's just say that a whole lot of actors on the public stage lack the maturity of middle schoolers. Last week, Fox News commentator Laura Ingraham was forced to make a public apology after sponsors started fleeing her show because she thought it was appropriate to publically mock 17-year-old David... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 04/04/2018

    Updated Apr 3, 2018

To the Editor: Your editorial, "Nobody is coming for your guns?" misses the mark and endorses the false premise that the real agenda for common-sense gun reform is to "disarm law-abiding Americans". Oregon Initiative Petition 43 is an attempt to manage the burgeoning private ownership of weapons of war, firearms specifically designed to kill the maximum number of victims quickly and efficiently. Guns used for hunting and individual self-protection are not addressed in OIP 43. There is no hidden agenda here to remove such... Full story

  • Viewing Sisters through camera lens

    Helen Schmidling|Updated Apr 3, 2018

Photographer Conrad Weiler is prolific. He heads outdoors with camera in hand nearly every day. After a short walk, a longer drive, or a kayak paddle, he returns to his home in Camp Sherman to harvest that day's crop of images. Some get posted on his Facebook account. Others he mails to friends. The best he has printed and framed. Many of these are on display throughout the month of April at Sisters Library, in the entryway and community room. • The people behind The Nugget...

    Updated Apr 3, 2018

Teresa Mahnken can scarcely believe 18 years have passed since she first walked through the door of The Nugget Newspaper. She came to The Nugget simply seeking a job and wound up finding a family. In the year 1999, Teresa and her husband, Barry, left Seattle, Washington, looking for a change - a place with four seasons, a place on a smaller scale than the booming tech capital Seattle had become. They found themselves in Reno, Nevada, but that wasn't quite the right fit. "Barry's folks, prior to us leaving Seattle, had moved... Full story

  • For the love of music

    Eileen Chambers|Updated Apr 3, 2018

If there is a perfect hometown for Darlene and Mick McGrady, a place filled with music, horses and wide-open spaces, Sisters is most definitely it. Enjoying a morning at their home surrounded by a plethora of musical instruments including two standing Irish harps, Darlene told me of her prolific and joyous career in music, one that included touring with the 1960s folk group the New Christy Minstrels. "I have been in music since I was knee high to a grasshopper," she laughed.... Full story

Building owner Mike Reed wanted to do a mural with McGregor, and put his niece Ashley Okura in touch with the... Full story
