  • Sisters artists make unique books

    “The possibilities are endless!” said art teacher Sondra Holtzman as she taught her students a new way to use photographs in their creations. The students gathered at Sisters Art Works last week for an Image Transfer Workshop led by the Bend artist. Holtzman specializes in “collage illustration” in which she takes found objects and photographs to create an image.   • Peterson Ridge Rumble set for April 9

    Sisters runners will hit the trail in the annual Peterson Ridge Rumble on Sunday, April 9. The race, which draws runners from near and far, is held on trails and dirt roads south and west of Sisters. Race director Sean Meissner of Sisters expects about 200 runners in all to take part in the 30-kilometer and 60-kilometer races.   • Gorka plays for enthusiastic audience

    Folk singer John Gorka played to a large and enthusiastic audience at the Sisters High School auditorium on Saturday, April 1. It was a return engagement in Sisters for the Minnesota-based singer-songwriter, who was a highlight performer at last fall’s Sisters Folk Festival. The festival sponsored the Saturday night concert, opened by a five-song set from Sisters songwriter Brent Alan.   • Board gives school superintendent a raise

    The Sisters School Board gave Superintendent Ted Thonstad a small raise and a generally favorable evaluation at its March 27 meeting.     Diane Shelly of Sisters died on March 29, 2006. She was born in Aberdeen, Washington to Gene and Loraine Crane on June 8, 1943. She graduated from Centennial High School in Gresham in 1961. Later that same year, on Thanksgiving Day, she was married to her high school sweetheart, Terry Shelly. They lived in beautiful Wallowa for many years during the 1970s.   • TAPS: ‘Think Again’ about alcohol abuse

    About 20 percent of eighth graders in Deschutes County drink three to five alcoholic beverages every 30 days, according to the Oregon Healthy Teens 2005 survey. Kids who begin drinking before the age of 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who wait until age 21.     Sisters residents Richard and Colleen Shultz and David and Judey Berray are pleased to announce the engagement of their children, Lauren Shultz and Jayson Berray.
