  • Kallberg will be Rodeo grand marshal

    Bonnie Malone|Updated Apr 4, 2017

Curt Kallberg has been selected as the Grand Marshal of the 2017 Sisters Rodeo Parade. The former wild horse racer, current auto racer and contractor is a man who thrives on action and speed, ready to do what it takes to get something done. In Sisters, Kallberg became a whirlwind in a town that had stopped shrugging its shoulders in accepting the inevitable, to become a community that instead takes action and conquers. The timing of his move to Sisters was part of that... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 04/05/2017

    Updated Apr 4, 2017

To the Editor: Perhaps all of us who live in and love this community could pause for a few moments and consider leaving national politics to the national press. Isn't it a lot nicer to read letters and stories about what is going on in the community when we read this wonderful local paper? TV and larger papers are filled with the national debate, why bring it here? I'm sure we are missing hearing about local good deeds and positive happenings because people are instead focused on national politics. When is the last time you... Full story

    Jodi Schneider, Correspondent|Updated Apr 4, 2017

"Storytellers" is the theme for the 42nd annual Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show (SOQS) with the 2017 poster created by Sisters artist Dan Rickards. This will be Rickards' fourth poster for SOQS since he was first selected in 2009. "The first poster I ever did for SOQS was a painting I named 'Summer Bliss,' of my daughter Emily running with a quilt through a field of flowers," Rickards said. This year's poster image depicts a larger-than-life storybook using quilts as pages. The sto... Full story

  • Creativity on display in Sisters

    Updated Apr 4, 2017

Guerrilla art and found-item upcycle fashion were features of the creativity - and spirit of fun - that were on display in Sisters last weekend. It was April 1, but the artists in town weren't fooling around - at least not entirely. They were here for the 2nd annual High Fiber Arts Symposium at FivePine Lodge & Conference Center, hosted by the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. The symposium speakers - through workshops, art roundtables, and a wearable art fashion show - explored how... Full story

  • Two decades of digging in Sisters

    Steve Kadel|Updated Apr 4, 2017

Mike Scherrer has had a lot of jobs throughout his life. He's been a ski lift mechanic, a fabrication welder, a carpenter, a kayak instructor and guide, and a bridge builder. But there was always one talent he could rely on. "I have this knack for running equipment," Scherrer said. That's been the basis of his business, Cascade Bobcat Service, which marked its 20th year of operation on March 21. He received his contractor's license on that day in 1997 when the business was on... Full story

  • Using cardio to beat Alzheimer's

    Andrew Loscutoff|Updated Apr 4, 2017

Alzheimer's disease hits close to home. It is an immensely challenging experience to watch a loved one suffer from cognitive decline. Alzheimer's currently affects more than five million people in the United States, and with the growth of the demographic over the age 65, that figure is expected to double within 20 years. Alzheimer's is a condition in which gradual mental impairment progressively destroys the function of the brain. The mechanism of this degeneration is the cells' connections or the cells themselves dying in... Full story

  • An incendiary telegram sends Americans 'Over There'

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Apr 4, 2017

April 6, 2017, will mark the 100th anniversary of the entry of the United States of America into The Great War. The U.S. had been officially neutral since the war burst like a sudden summer thunderstorm over Europe in August of 1914. Unlike a summer storm, the war did not pass in a quick, violent spasm. It ground on and on, chewing up thousands, then millions of lives as the allies Great Britain, France and Russia became locked in a death struggle with the Central Powers -... Full story

  • Stars over Sisters

    Delsie McCrystal/Ramsey Shar|Updated Apr 4, 2017

As the month of April comes around, there are new things you can see in the night sky. Two of the more prominent constellations you can see this month are Leo and Hydra. The head of Hydra is visible between January and May while Leo is best viewed during the evening hours of spring. The one we will focus on in this article is Hydra, also known as the sea serpent. It's the largest constellation of the 88 and covers 1,303 square degrees in the sky. Of the constellations that... Full story

  • Owls, owls and more owls

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Apr 4, 2017

There've been some interesting phone calls arriving on both my home and travelin' phones that are giving me cause to suspect the alien barred owl population (from the eastern USA and Canada) may be on the rise, and people are confusing them with our native great gray owls. Great grays are owls of the open spaces of the high country with evergreen forests. They like to hang out on the edges of meadows, hiding in the thick foliage of evergreens, waiting for gophers and other... Full story

    Kathryn Godsiff, Correspondent|Updated Apr 4, 2017

The Rimrock Riders Event Center at Brasada Ranch in Powell Butte is an equestrian venue with two arenas, grandstands, a café and ample space for trailers and spectator vehicles. And when it's full of cheering teenagers, their parents and friends, the happy noise echoes to the big metal spans that hold the roof. Such was the scene at the second Central District OHSET meet last weekend, when teams from Sisters and 13 other schools on the east side of the Cascades congregated to compete in events ranging from saddle seat... Full story

  • Sisters Bridge Club cruises the Caribbean

    Craig Eisenbeis|Updated Apr 4, 2017

The Sisters Bridge Club is quite literally expanding its horizons. Last month, the local group of card-players took their card-playing skills to the Caribbean on the club's first-ever bridge cruise. Although the Sisters Bridge Club has been around for decades, it was on life support until a few years ago, when membership suddenly exploded into the vibrant group that it is today. The Club's current organizer, Susan Sandberg, is a frequent cruiser and thought it would be fun to... Full story
