Lake Creek Lodge in Camp Sherman has been honored with the prestigious 2007 Gene Leo Memorial Award for Tourism. The award recognized the lodge owners for their environmental stewardship and socially responsible practices in the tourism and hospitality industry. Early reports on Thursday afternoon were ominous. Police believed that a man had been hit by a car on Adams Avenue, right in front of the Sisters Art Works building. The driver had allegedly fled, and the victim had been flown by Air Life to the hospital. An attempt-to-locate was put out with a description of the supposedly fleeing vehicle. Just as three developers are seeking to build destination resorts in the Sisters Country, the state is looking at tightening up the rules governing such developments. The Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development has expressed new concerns over the unanticipated impacts of destination resorts and intends to ask the governor for changes in current regulations. To the Editor: The recent headline news "Firefighters torch house for training" and the comments by the people who are all in favor of "training fires" makes it clear that none of them have taken into consideration the large number of people that have bronchial problems caused by the smoke. When most folks think about being green with their car, they think about gas mileage and emissions. However, the amount of emission produced by driving can pale when compared to the emissions and toxic waste generated during the construction and ultimate recycling of the car. The Sisters School Board allows public comment at its meetings. The question as to what is and what is not "appropriate" public comment came to a head last month. It has been a long winter in Sisters. For Jennifer Shores and her 13-year-old son Dustyn, this winter has been especially bitter and grueling. Work has been on-and-off for Shores. The Lady Outlaws took first place honors at the seven-team tournament held at the Tokatee Golf Course on Tuesday, April 1. Sunny, warm weather made it a beautiful day for golf. Cool weather greeted the lone golfer who took advantage of the opening of the Big Meadow driving range, the first golf facilities at Black Butte Ranch (BBR) to open for the 2008 season. A deputy arrested a 40-year-old man for disorderly conduct, menacing and harassment after an altercation in the street. Two men were booted from a local bar for fighting. The Outlaws matched up against Liberty on Tuesday, April 1 and faced Lincoln the following day. Two school records highlighted the annual Sisters Rotary Track and Field Invitational held Saturday, April 5. Cory McCaffrey smashed his own school record in the long jump, soaring 23-feet-4-inches, which is the second best jump of the 2008 season at any level. Sisters continually demonstrates that it is a community with a heart. Right now when economic times are tough, area agencies are more important than ever to help folks in need. According to Steve Murray, food bank coordinator at NeighborImpact, unemployment rates have gone up significantly in Deschutes County over the last two months. The Way We Art, a local gallery and working art studio, has moved from its Hood Avenue location to a new space in the Sisters Art Works building at 204 W. Adams Ave. According to the gallery owners, the new location will allow them to better fulfill their goal to offer creative classes. Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show organizers have a big goal. They hope during this year's quilt show week to raise $10,000 for the Wendy's Wish foundation. Funds will be raised through the sale of 1,000 fabric postcards. An ongoing community effort is making the project a reality. Sisters Organization for Activities and Recreation (SOAR) is changing it's name. The goal of the name change to Sisters Parks and Recreation District is to help the organization develop an image of serving youth and adults alike. The last time we saw turkey vultures (TVs) was in late September of last year. They came winging in from as far away as Warm Springs to spend the night in Sisters. The weather was turning cool, the sun swinging far to the south and the daylight hours shortening.
