"Come and meet the candidates." That invitation is being extended by the school board to all Sisters School District residents this week. Sue and Marlin Ard are ready to join with two dozen others to start a restoration project in the burned out area at the western edge of Black Butte Ranch. Photo provided The Friends of Black Butte Ranch began planting trees two weeks ago, starting a reforestation project on part of the burned-out area along McAllister Road at the western edge of the Ranch. Black Butte Ranch began metering its water to all residents this month. A note in the most recent issue of Tollgate's Homeowners newsletter raised concerns about exceeding the subdivision's water permit. Does all this indicate the area is running out of water? Children from infants to 11-year-olds will swarm in Creekside City Park on Easter Sunday, April 20, in the annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Sisters-Camp Sherman Volunteer Fire & Ambulance Association. The action kicks off promptly at 1 p.m., rain or shine, at Creekside Park, off East Jefferson Avenue and the adjoining Three Sisters Overnight Park at the east entrance to Sisters. It isn't contagious, but whatever's flying around is "catching." Nature's own dust and pollen has brought about a double whammy to those caught up in the smoke from the controlled burning all around this area this year. Coughing and wheezing, crying and sneezing are commonplace in and around Sisters this week. Marine Lance Corporal McKibben Womack will be doing some of that work. Womack's Marine Corps Reserve Unit stationed in Denver, Colorado, is heading out this week through Germany and Kuwait to provide security and humanitarian assistance in Iraq. Photo by Conrad Weiler Novice Bicycle Motocross (BMX) racer Chad Kernutt, age 13, from Camp Sherman, brought home his fifth career win from Pasco, Washington, this month. Competing in the Great Northwest Nationals, April 4-6, Kernutt scoped the track in a Friday pre-race, finished third on Saturday, and took first place for his age division on Sunday. At the Mudslinger race in Blodgett on April 6, the cyclists finished 40 points ahead of closest rival, Summit. The mountain bike club consists of 17 members, up from around eight last season. Tom Landis of Camp Sherman has received several awards for his outstanding swim record. Landis was awarded "The most valuable male swimmer for Oregon" at the U.S. Masters awards ceremony in Portland recently. Swim magazine chose him as one of the six outstanding male swimmers in the United States. He was chosen "Most Valuable Swimmer" for the year by team COMA (Central Oregon Masters Aquatics, Bend). Aspen Lakes, Big Meadow and Glaze Meadow are ready for the spring golf season, and offer a variety of golfing opportunities for all ages and abilities. Aspen Lakes offers an 18-hole course, complete with full driving range, pro shop and snack shop. The first nine holes at Aspen Lakes opened in 1997 and the second nine in 2000. Golf Digest ranks Aspen Lakes among the top 15 courses in the state. Bob Buckmann offered a "patriotic proposal" to the Sisters City Council to put up American flags on the light poles through Sisters similar to the display along the streets of Redmond. Buckmann made his proposal at the city council meeting Thursday, April 10. The effort would be run as an "adopt-a-flag" program. Businesses or families would donate money for a flag to be put up in their name in town. The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce indicated they would be willing to sell the flags. Less than two weeks into the Iraq campaign, war commentators proclaimed that the war was stalled and not going according to plan. Theater Commander Gen. Tommy Franks responded, "We have the power to be patient." By the time the ink dried on the pundits' impatient manifestos, U.S. tanks were rolling into Baghdad. Kites floated, swooped and darted across the skies above Squaw Creek Ranch east of Sisters on Saturday, April 12, as the culmination of a month-long celebration of the arts took flight.
