  • Forest Service to ignite burn season this week

    The Sisters Ranger District will touch off the first controlled burn of the season along Highway 20 west of Cascade Meadow Ranch on Thursday, April 20. According to fire specialist Kirk Metzger, the burning is expected to continue on Friday and “on every open day we can after that,” Metzger said. “Usually we have 400 or 500 acres burned by now, but because it’s been a wet spring we have been unable to conduct any controlled burning,” he said.     Undersheriff Larry Blanton hopes this spring is the last time he has to hammer in yard signs urging voters to keep the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office running.     The Sisters Camp-Sherman Rural Fire Protection District has tightened security measures after someone broke into an ambulance at Sisters Fire Hall on Sunday night, April 9, apparently in a futile attempt to steal narcotics.     To the Editor: It was with interest I read the notice in “Sisters Salutes” that saluted Sisters businesses for their contributions that recently allowed the Sisters High Cascades Off Road Triathlon, an XTERRA event to donate $7,500 to the Rotaty Club for use in their local projects.   • Developers give grants to Sisters schools

    The Sisters School Board filled three positions on the district budget committee at the same time that it received two pieces of good fiscal news at its last meeting, April 10. Board Member Rob Corrigan, who is also a board member of the Sisters Schools Foundation, told his colleagues that two local developers have announced grants for the schools.     The Sisters Ranger District should be in a new headquarters in Sisters in July 2008.     Singer/songwriter Katie Cavanaugh has been given the 2005 “Folk Song of the Year” award by the Central Oregon Songwriters Association. This is the second year in a row Cavanaugh has received this honor. She was also won second place in the “2005 Central Oregon Songwriters Association People’s Choice” contest.     The search for a successor to Sisters Middle School Principal Lora Nordquist has already begun. If all goes as Superintendent Ted Thonstad hopes, he will have someone appointed by May 26. “I’d like to have it done before Memorial Day,” he said last week.     Sisters Little League will start the 2006 season this week with the largest number of participants in the organization’s history.     Sisters High School auditorium will play host on Wednesday April 26 to a unique Road to Reno Jazz Concert. The concert, which starts at 7 p.m., will feature bands traveling through Sisters en route to the 44th annual Reno International Jazz Festival.     The girls’ softball team lost 12-1 at home on Thursday, April 13. The Sweet Home Huskies sent the Lady Outlaws to the locker room in just five innings due to the 10-run rule.     Five Sisters area residents asked some detailed questions at an April 13 public hearing in Sisters to review a proposed conservation agreement on 1,233 acres on the Rimrock Ranch along Whychus Creek north of Sisters.   • Crossroaders keep Sisters road clean

    For nearly 15 years, Crossroads residents have been cleaning up Highway 242 between the Sisters Middle School and Cold Springs Campground.     A contingent from Sisters’ Habitat for Humanity chapter is heading to Katrina country this week. Ten hardy workers will make Abita Springs, Louisiana home base for a week, as they make their contribution to one of many Habitat homes being built in the area.   • Excavator fills in hole at former Chevron site

    The gaping hole at the former site of Sisters Chevron has been filled in. A dump truck poured in a load of fill dirt last week that was spread by a skip loader, closing the excavation that had been open for months.     Local trails advocates took some time last week to make sure that they are on the right path in creating a trails network around Sisters. The Sisters Trails Committee took a long look to the past and a short look to the future during a three-hour workshop last Thursday evening.     The boys golf team took first place honors at the tournament held at Aspen Lakes on Tuesday, April 11. The Outlaws finished at 334 which was the team’s best score of the year. Currier on June 26, 1959, in Bend. She worked as head housekeeper at Ponderosa Lodge in Sisters and was a former member of the Soroptimists Club.
