Hellman, 59, was chosen by unanimous vote of the Sisters School Board Friday morning, April 18.   • Couple named Rodeo Parade Grand Marshals

Sisters Rodeo Association President Glenn Miller made the announcement at a recent meeting of the association. She received a letter from the National Federation of High School (NFHSC) Coaches informing her of the award. The letter congratulated her on being selected as the 2002 NFHS Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in the sport of Girls Golf.   • Band wins top ranking

    The Sisters High School Band won first place at the Capital Conference Band Festival Competition held at Sweet Home High School on Wednesday, April 9. The 64-member band has won this prestigious award for four years in a row and again received an invitation to compete in the OSAA Oregon State Music Championships. The band was recognized for its hard work by a panel of Oregon Band Directors Association judges and won many positive, appreciative comments about its performance.   • Sisters fire areas off limits to off-roaders

    To help protect fragile burned soils, prevent additional resource impacts and aid in the recovery process, the Sisters Ranger District has issued two area closure orders prohibiting off-road vehicle use in the Eyerly and Cache Mountain wildfire areas. The area closures prohibit the use of motorized vehicles off forest development roads. Forest development roads are signed at the road entrance with route markers.   • Sisters artist honored for Quilt Show poster

    Sisters artist Dennis McGregor was honored earlier this month at the 2003 NorthWest ADDY Award competition held in Boise, Idaho. The competition is the second of a three-tiered national competition conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF). McGregor Design earned an Addy Silver Award for last year's Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show poster.   • Peterson Ridge run scheduled for Sisters

    The first annual Peterson Ridge Rumble is set for Sunday, May 4. This will be a 17-mile trail running race on the Peterson Ridge trail just south of Sisters. Designed to be fun and low-key, the event will start and finish at 385 W. Washington Ave., with a barbecue after the race. The race is mostly on dirt with a mixture of single- and double-track trails. There is a gentle elevation gain the first half, and a gentle elevation loss the second half.   • Sisters residents can order banners

    Many families in the Sisters community have expressed interest in displaying a Blue Star Banner to show their support for family members in the service. A recent story in The Nugget reported that the Blue Star Banner was intended to honor mothers whose children are in action. According to Jack Berry of the Sisters Veterans Group, "the initial intent of the Blue Star Banner was to honor family members whose children were in the service.   • Rotary Contest awards $6,000 in scholarships

    Four Sisters High School seniors got a financial boost for their futures after sharing a total of $6,000 in the first annual Rotary Professional Technical contest. A panel of five judges selected Ben Scharf as the first place winner based upon his presentation of piano and guitar music before a luncheon group of about 35 Rotarians. Two of Scharf's selections were his own original songs, performed with an acoustic guitar. Scharf, who will study music at the University of Oregon, earned $3,000.     A legend stopped by Black Butte Ranch last week. Former golf pro "Bunny" Mason spoke to a large, enthusiastic Friends of Black Butte Ranch (BBR) audience. The visit kindled many old memories as the designer of the Glaze Meadow golf course met with his friends and former colleagues. Hired by Brooks Resources in 1969 in the early planning stages of BBR, Bunny remained at the Ranch until 1992.     The timing of next year's spring vacation in Sisters schools has been as unsettled as spring weather. It underwent one more change at the last school board meeting. At its March meeting, the board adopted a 2003-04 calendar that would make one major change from the recent past -- cutting the length of spring vacation to one week instead of two.     The program credits Rosalie Van Ness as Assistant Director of "Final Reunion," the highly successful play currently running at the 2nd Street Theater in Bend.     Hundreds of children from all over the Pacific Northwest turned out to search for some 4,000 Easter eggs at the Sisters-Camp Sherman Volunteer Fire & Ambulance Association's annual Easter Egg Hunt at Creekside City Park.
