Changes are coming to the way scholarships are awarded to graduating Sisters High School seniors. Sisters Graduate Resource Organization (Sisters GRO) is the organization that works with the multiplicity of individuals and organizations in the Sisters community that provide thousands of dollars in scholarships each spring. The upcoming May 21 Deschutes County special election will include eight local candidates to fill four open seats on the Sisters School District Board of Directors. The successful appeal of the competitive proposal bid evaluation ordinance for the $250,000 Hood Avenue/Fir Street waterline upgrade process has gutted the ordinance. The City of Sisters re-issued the request for bids on the Hood Avenue project on Wednesday in a "lowest-bid-wins" format. The bids will be opened, reviewed for completeness, and a winner selected on May 25. Deschutes Land Trust (DLT) is hosting its 2013 Walk + Hike series. From April through October land trust volunteer naturalists lead more than 100 free walks, hikes, and bike rides at various land trust protected lands. Marsha Marr, owner of the Sisters shop "Miss Sew-It-All," literally cut into a five-foot square piece of Italian history a few weeks ago. The red and black plaid woolen fabric dates back to 1906 Italy. Carmen and Laurie SantaMaria returned to Sisters from Pennsylvania with the historic piece of fabric in March. The Outlaws defeated the Sweet Home Huskies 3-2 at home in Sisters on Friday, April 19. The win pushed Sisters to a perfect 8-0 league record and keeps them at the top at No. 1. The Sisters Fire Hall got an unusual visitor on Monday afternoon. A Life Flight helicopter landed in the back parking lot of the fire hall on Elm Street, the first such landing in Sisters. The Life Flight crew was coming in for a lengthy EMT training session, according to Deputy Fire Chief Jeremy Ast. Sisters' boys' lacrosse team is firing on all cylinders and trounced their competition this past week. The Outlaws crushed Redmond 17-1 at home on Tuesday, April 16, and three days later posted a 19-2 victory over Hermiston. The Lady Outlaws started their season with an outstanding 14-1 victory in Roseburg on March 22 and then defeated Sheldon 12-9 on April 9. The Wolftree Whychus Creek Discovery Outpost was not always the ideal conservation site it is today. According to Forrest Babcock and Janet Zuelke, who live just above the outpost, the area below them was a scene of gunfire, nasty barking dogs and people living along the creek who weren't in the least interested in conservation, or being good neighbors.
