  • Sisters man arrested on burglary charges

    Sheriff’s deputies arrested 18-year-old Austen James Stark of Sisters on Sunday, April 23, on charges that he broke into Crossroads Shell and attempted to break into the nearby Outlaw coffee stand. According to Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office reports, a citizen saw a man trying to gain access to the window of the espresso stand. He was then allegedly seen near the window of the Shell station.   • Court sets trial date for Shane Hall

    The trial date for Shane Hall, accused of sex abuse of a minor, has been set for August 22. Hall and his lawyer, John Halpern of Eugene, were in court on Monday, April 24, for the trial date hearing. Halpern and the Deschutes County Assistant District Attorney agreed the trial might last six days. The August date was the first that accommodated court and attorney schedules.     To the Editor: Mickey Duehren’s letter in the April 19 edition of The Nugget may have given the impression that the Sisters Garden Club was unhappy with the Rotary Club’s use of donated funds for the memorial garden at the west entrance to Sisters. This cannot be farther from the truth. When the Rotary Club showed us landscape plans and asked for financial help we were delighted to be able to comply. After all, we are the Garden Club.     The site of the Sisters Ranger District headquarters will probably contain a mix of commercial development, housing and public facilities when the property is sold and developed.   • Fire officials enact new rules for outdoor burning

    Folks who burn yard debris or have campfires in Sisters have some new rules to live by.     The Lady Outlaws golf team placed third in the Capital Conference match held at the Santiam Golf Course in Stayton on Thursday, April 20. Molalla took first with a team score of 429. Blanchet was runner-up at 444 and Sisters took third at 454. Other scores for the day were: Stayton (506), Cascade (599), Sweet Home (478) and Kennedy (529).     The Sisters Middle School Choir, under the direction of Tara MacSween, captured first place at the Central Oregon Music Educators Association (COMEA) Middle School Choir Festival, which was held on Wednesday, April 12. Eight middle schools were represented and Sisters earned the highest average score overall.     A divided Sisters School Board Monday night authorized Superintendent Ted Thonstad to try to extend the life of a day care center at the middle school for one more year.     The Lady Outlaws softball team fell 8-2 at home to Molalla on Tuesday, April 18 for their fourth straight loss this season. But they turned their tough times around later in the week to beat North Marion. In the earlier contest, Molalla took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.     The Sisters High School boys golf team came out on top at the Capital Conference match at Mallard Creek in Sweet Home on Tuesday, April 18. Sisters took first place honors with a team score of 322. Stayton was runner-up with 341 and Sweet Home placed third just one stroke back at 342. Fourth place went to Cascade (355), fifth to Molalla (356) and North Marion finished at 361. Scott Barton carded a four-under-par 68 to win individual tournament honors.     The Sisters Ranger District is seeking public comments on the proposed closing of a short road into the Balancing Rocks area above the Metolius River arm of Lake Billy Chinook.     The Sisters boys tennis team won both of its matches this week, defeating Molalla 7-1 on Tuesday, April 18, in Molalla and two days later shutting out North Marion 8-0 at Black Butte Ranch.     Nikki Lewis crossed the finish line on Monday, April 17, in the nation’s oldest and most prestigious distance race: the Boston Marathon. She finished the race with a time of 3:42:36.     The pavilion at Sisters Inn & RV park was demolished on Monday, April 24, after the city’s plans to move it to Cliff Clemens Park met stiff opposition from neighbors.
