    Two candidates are running for Position 4 on the Sisters School Board, a position that will be vacated by Jeff Smith, who has held that seat since 1999. Ballots for the May 17 election go out this week. Andrew Gorayeb and Cort Horner are vying for the open position; Christine Jones, the incumbent board chair, is running unopposed.   • City council to vote on water rates

    The Sisters City Council will consider a resolution to set new water rates at its regular meeting on Thursday, April 28. The city council has been in sometimes-contentious discussions about water rates since last June. While there is general agreement that the water fund needs to be shored up, there has been disagreement about the scope of improvements to the water system, and some councilors have been reluctant to impose rate increases in the face of economic hardship.   • Sisters teacher finalist for award

    Samra Spear, a language arts teacher at Sisters High School, has been named as a finalist for OnPoint Community Credit Union's Prize for Excellence in Education contest. That puts Spear in line for the Educator of the Year award. That winner will have her mortgage paid for one year and her school will receive $5,000 for resources and supplies.     To the Editor: The Sisters Community could use a hand. The continuing saga of cell tower siting issues again rears its head in Sisters Country and this time we may be the victim of land use loopholes. Last year AT&T fought to locate a 150-foot tower on the top of a private hill directly in a panoramic Cascades view. The stopping factor was not community or quality of life concerns, rather a zoning technicality and a couple of very determined and resourceful residents fighting what should have been a community fight.   • Quilt Show announces quilt challenge

    Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show will host the inaugural Small Wonders Quilt Challenge and Exhibit. Small Wonders are quilts sized between 18 and 24 inches, donated to help raise money for the show and Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD). Quilters from all over the country have submitted more than 70 entries for the challenge. The Small Wonders quilts will be exhibited at the Sisters Library for the month of May.     Sara Marcus, the daughter of Jeri and Bob Buckmann of Sisters, has been chosen as the 2011 Rodeo Queen of the Spray Rodeo. Sara is 18 and a 2010 graduate of Sisters High School. She was a varsity competitor and co-captain of the Sisters High School Equestrian Team and an active member of the Tri-County High School Rodeo.     The Outlaws recorded three more consecutive league wins to stay on top in the Sky-Em league with a perfect 7-0 record. On Monday, April 18, the Outlaws traveled to Elmira to make up a game that was cancelled the previous week due to rain. Sisters won the contest 6-1. Sisters' Shane Groth threw a complete game for Sisters, with 14 strikeouts and two walks. The game proved to be a pitching battle between Groth and Elmira's Travis Boggs.   • Eagle cam offers view into nest

    Folks in the Sisters Country can get a rare glimpse into the early life of a pair of golden eagle chicks by viewing the "eagle cam" through the Wolftree Web site, www.beoutside.org (click through to "Golden Eagle Cam"). The camera is set up on Forrest Babcock and Janet Zuelke's property overlooking Whychus Creek. The golden eagle nest is on the rim of the canyon about 1/4 mile away.     The Outlaws defeated the Cowboys at Crook County 5-2 on April 19, but suffered a tough 1-7 loss at home against Mt. View two days later. In Tuesday's action, Luke Gnos and Devon Calvin recorded wins in singles play for the Outlaws. Gnos (No. 3 singles) beat Gabe Alvarez 6-4, 5-7, 10-3. Luke was up 5-4 in the second set but was unable to put the match away until the 10-point match break. Gnos finished out the match with solid ground strokes to earn the win.     The boy's golf squad had a tough time at the Bend Golf and Country Club on Monday, April 18. Sisters finished last out of the eight teams that were in attendance. Summit took first place with a team score of 321, and Crook County was runner-up at 332. Redmond shot three strokes behind Crook County to finish third (335). Zach Cummings shot a 90 for Sisters, Nathan Pajutee carded a 92 and Jaxon Stark finished at 94. Tyler Berg carded a 117 and Dexter Muller rounded out the scoring at 198.   • Girls golf wins JV Tourney

    The Lady Outlaws golf squad took first place at the JV tournament held at Aspen Lakes on Wednesday, April 20. Due to very cold and windy conditions, teams played a slightly modified tournament where the course was shortened to assure players could complete the nine holes. Sisters posted a team score of 197, and Redmond was just two strokes back at 199. Madras took third at 208.     Something new has been added to the outdoor recreation menu at Suttle Lake. In an effort to provide a variety of outdoor experiences, the Forest Service has provided and established yurts at selected campgrounds. Link Creek Campground at the west end of Suttle Lake is one of those to be selected.     The Rimrock Sisters club volleyball "Fourteens" team made their presence felt in a 41-team tournament in Spokane, Washington, earlier this month. The girls were seeded No. 3 in a 16-team bracket, winning their pool and keeping them in the upper division gold bracket.
