The Sisters City Council will decide on a proposed supplemental budget at the May 9 city council meeting. A transfer of appropriations totaling $92,906 is proposed to several city funds to adjust the budget to account for the severance payment to former city manager Eileen Stein. Stein received a severance package totaling approximately $98,000 as part of a settlement agreement in April that included her resignation from her position after an 11-year tenure. For golfers, the Central Oregon Shootout means spring has finally arrived. Several hundred golfers have come to the area every year since 2003 to play three days of golf at Aspen Lakes, Black Butte Ranch and Eagle Crest. The tournament offers payouts each day in six divisions. Spring isn't always so spring-like for the tournament, but this year's event enjoyed nearly perfect weather. Each year in April, Sisters' status as a Tree City USA gets a boost from students at Sisters Elementary School. Planting trees in public spaces has become an Arbor Day Sisters tradition. This year, students planted aspen trees around the swale next to the stallion statue along Cascade Avenue and at Cliff Clemens Park on Larch Street. We love visiting Sisters Airpark for $100 hamburgers and it is great to see on the website that the runway is being resurfaced. Marilyn Burkhardt moved to Sisters last November from the Oregon coast, where she lived and worked in many art media for 25 years. Her work is based on her love of nature and animals. Her eclectic tastes range from bronze casting and linoleum block carving to painting in acrylic and the ancient Japanese marbling technique suminagashi. Current school board chair Don Hedrick is running for a second four-year term in the May 21 election. Hedrick said, "One of the reasons that I hope to get reelected is to maintain some continuity on the school board. Taylor Lucas, a senior at Sisters High School, is Sisters Boy Scout Troop 139's newest Eagle Scout. Lucas met all of the requirements necessary to become an Eagle Scout, and was awarded scouting's highest rank following a review board on Wednesday, April 24. Charlotte Stromsland passed peacefully after a brief illness on Friday, April 19, surrounded by loving family at her daughter's home in Camp Sherman. Born October 22, 1917, in Akron, Ohio, she was the only child of Carl and Charlotte Ganier. She moved to Chicago, Illinois, as a toddler, where she later graduated from Austin High School and then attended Northwestern University. In 1941 she married Emery Stromsland, the love of her life. Given favorable weather conditions, Deschutes National Forest fuel specialists on the Sisters District plan to conduct prescribed burns on three separate projects next week. Two of the burns are planned for south of Black Butte Ranch and one is planned for northwest of Camp Sherman in the Metolius Basin. A 135-acre burn, called McCache North, is planned for an area two miles south of Black Butte Ranch and one mile north of State Highway 242.
