    Christine Jones has tossed her hat in the ring to challenge current board vice chairman Steve Rudinsky for Position 3 in the school board election on May 15. The position carries a four year term. Forty-six-year-old Rudinsky moved to Sisters in 2001 with his wife and three children, two of whom attend Sisters Middle School.     To the Editor: As a former chairman of the Sisters School Board, mother of two children who went to Sisters public schools and now grandmother of a child who will attend Sisters public schools, I take a deep interest in the quality of our schools. Good schools are not only good for our children, they are good for our community as well. I feel education is an investment that we make in our future.   • Sisters creates new mixed use zone

    It took months of wrangling to iron out the details, but last Thursday the Sisters City Council unanimously agreed to create a new type of mixed use business zone for a 42-acre parcel at the north end of Sisters. The zone was created specifically to address the plans for developer Dutch Pacific's Sun Ranch Business Park, but many of its provisions will also apply to the nearby Three Sisters Business Park, which is now entering the land use process.   • Elementary school to host garden fair

    Students are nurturing and manicuring hanging baskets to be sold at the Sisters Elementary School Garden Club's fourth annual Garden Fair on Saturday, May 12, in the elementary school commons. According to parent volunteer Karly Drake-Lusby, this year's sale will feature nearly 10 times as many baskets as last year. Baskets sold out last year during the first 45 minutes of the sale.     Sisters Elementary School Physical Education teacher Mark LaMont will be packing his bags for a year when he goes to Nepal this summer. LaMont and Sisters High School teacher Rand Runco traditionally spend about a month there each summer, accompanied by area volunteers.     The boys lacrosse team shut out the Redmond Panthers 6-0 at home on Tuesday, April 24. Sisters jumped out to a quick start and never looked back. At the half the Outlaws held a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Nick Pepperling and Nate Emberton. Sisters added four more goals in the second half for the shutout.   • Committee strips resort ban from bill

    The controversial and hotly debated Senate Bill 30 left committee last week with an amendment that shocked some, delighted others and left observers scratching their heads. The amendment stripped the bill of language forbidding destination resorts in or within three miles of the Metolius basin.   • Sisters celebrates Arbor Day

    A new greenspire linden tree now adorns the parking area in front of Sisters City Hall. The tree was donated by C & C Nursery Sales as part of a celebration of Arbor Day. The event held Tuesday, April 24, was celebrated by several classes from Sisters Elementary School. Each student received a ponderosa pine seedling to take home and plant.     The gunshot-wounded juvenile bald eagle found by Linda Cotter of Sisters on her birthday last February has recovered but because of its injuries can not be returned to the wild.
