    Central Electric Cooperative (CEC) has launched the construction of a controversial upgrade to the Tollgate substation which will allow the utility to run 115kv power to the western reaches of the Sisters Country, including Black Butte Ranch. As excavation crews dug trenches and pits for vaults, a logging contractor pushed over trees and loaded them onto a truck - roots and all - to be transported to the Camp Polk Preserve northeast of Sisters where they will be used for... Full story

    Whychus Creek, our bubbling old friend we see every day as we go about our business in and around Sisters, is getting more publicity than a politician on election day -and it needs it. The money and effort going into fishery restoration, flood control and riparian health will now be augmented by efforts to heal over vandalism and "social damages" along the creek.   • Land Trust holds Camp Polk work party

    Last week, The Deschutes Land Trust took yet another step in the Whychus Creek restoration project at The Camp Polk Meadow Preserve. In less than two weeks, excavation is scheduled to begin on the Land Trust's realignment of Whychus Creek. One of the final impediments was a rail fence standing in the way of the project.     The girls' tennis team had a packed week with four scheduled matches and no time for practice. Sisters fell 6-2 at home to Junction City (JC) on Tuesday, April 28, and three days later lost 8-0 against Crook County. The Lady Outlaws came back a day later, Friday, May 1, and dominated play in their match against Redmond's JV No. 2 team to easily win all their matches.     Ruth Golden Ingham, of Sisters, really gets around. In her lifetime she has visited over 100 countries, and from each one she returned with quilting material with which she artistically remembered her travels.     Sisters area mentors in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon (BBBSCO) program got a shock last week when an e-mail arrived from their enrollment and match support specialist, Robyn Komar. Komar worked out of the Redmond office of BBBSCO, and she'd just received word that her office was closing and she was out of a job.     Pat Todd of Sisters passed away April 29 as the result of a stroke. She was born in Independence, Oregon on October 15, 1930 and was a lifelong resident of Oregon.
