Jeff Minke, a 2006 Sisters High School graduate, is creating a new normal for his life. He lives with Crohn's Disease, an incurable inflammatory disease affecting the intestines and colon. Since being diagnosed in 2002, Jeff has had multiple surgeries resulting in the loss of portions of his intestines. Carrie Ward, director of Sisters Organization for Activities and Recreation (SOAR) last week clarified what happened in an incident last summer where a child was left behind at the Village Green during a SOAR field trip. In an interview with The Nugget last month, Ward had stated that the child had been dropped off at the park instead of at SOAR and had therefore not been included in a head count. The Sisters School District is taking a critical look at its Nutrition Services program. This year the district budgeted $100,000 from its general fund to subsidize the program. At the request of school board member Christine Jones, the district is evaluating ways to reduce this amount. "We are looking at how we could move the program into the black or at least closer," said superintendent Elaine Drakulich. Sisters resident Anne Geser is one of two people suing SilverLite Trailers of Springfield for $37,000. The suit says that a horse was able to kick its way out of a defective trailer, falling into Portland rush-hour traffic and breaking both front legs. (See The Nugget, September 12, 2006.) Geser is the owner of the three-horse SilverLite trailer, which she no longer uses. Bret Godfrey brought his music students to Camp Sherman on May 3 as he has every year for the past five years. Godfrey, six chaperones and his students all raised funds so Black Butte School students could compete in National History day in 2009. The Community Center shook with singing, clapping and some loud scat happening. This year the Jazz Ensemble consisted of 23 singers, 11 guys, 12 girls, a drummer and Godfrey filling the double role of director and piano player. Like a butterfly slowly emerging from its cocoon in the spring, the KOA campground and RV park is opening to a new era. Located next to the rodeo grounds to the east of Sisters on Highway 20, the Sisters/Bend KOA Kampground & Grocery is filling a big need in the Sisters area with the significant loss of areas for RVs to camp. It's spring and as it has been for eons, bird-nesting season is underway. One of the birds that gets an early jump on nesting time are Great Horned Owls. They begin laying eggs in February when the nights are still down to 12 degrees and cold winds and snow are swirling about. Right about now nestlings from the owl's 28-day incubation period are about two weeks of age, and they look a lot like a fuzzy softball with a beak, and eyes that are not quite open all the way. While an April 24 earthquake in Reno measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale grabbed the attention of Sisters students, those students grabbed the attention of audiences and judges at the 45th annual Reno International Jazz Festival. The Reno festival took place throughout eleven performance venues on the campus of the University of Nevada, featuring over 300 student groups and employing over 55 of the top jazz educators in the country. Tim and Janice Comfort announce the engagement of their daughter Sara Comfort to Alberto Perez. The couple is planning a November wedding in San Diego, CA. Sara graduated from SHS in 1998 and is currently a cardiac RN in San Diego. Alberto is an aeronautic engineer. He is the son of Lillia Stackhouse of Houston, TX and Alberto Perez Sr. of Dallas, TX. Tim and Janice Comfort announce the engagement of their son Travis Comfort to Meredith Cawthron of Phoenix, AZ. The couple are planning a July wedding in Sonoma, CA. Travis is a 2000 graduate of SHS and 2004 graduate of ASU. He is employed with Discount Tire as an Internet Business Developer. Meredith is the daughter of David and Judy Cawthron and is a 2004 graduate of ASU. She is employed as an Interior Designer. They will reside in Phoenix.... Full story
