Sisters turned into Lacrosse Town, USA last weekend, as 57 teams, some from as far away as Nevada and Montana, took to the fields to battle it out in America's native sport. Every usable stretch of grass in Sisters seemed to be in use as players from varsity high school programs down to fourth-grade beginners dodged and weaved, passing from stick to stick and shooting for the goal net. "Can you imagine trying to build a building in Africa by email?" Janet Storton asks rhetorically. Storton was anxious to see the outcome - even as her plane landed recently in the capitol city of Kampala and she made her way up the... Full story

Former Lady Outlaw Dara Kosanke is taking giant steps toward her goal of playing Division-1 softball. And quite possibly sooner than later. To say her transition from standout softball player at Sisters High School to Walla Walla Community College softball was easy might be an understatement. Then again, for those who know Kosanke, it's not been surprising. "Dara is the complete player," said WWCC Coach Mike Staudenmaier. "She constantly continues to want to learn and become... Full story

From 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a brief lunch break, the clippers are standing in one place doing nothing but picking up slippery little fish, clipping the adipose fin, depositing clipped fish into a holding tank and repeating the process hour after hour. Jim Plank, along with Jeff Crow, both of Sisters, are two of the dedicated fish-clippers at Wizard Fall Fish Hatchery on the Metolius River. "In a day's time I think... Full story

In most of my hiking columns, I encourage readers to try new experiences and new places, but not this time. This expedition involved precipitous cliffs, rockslides, dense thickets, rattlesnakes, ticks, thorns, dead-end routes, strenuous climbing, extensive steep hillside traverses, and constant alertness for the source of the copious mountain lion sign. When we finished this endurance contest, I wasn't sure if what we felt was a sense of accomplishment or just relief. Having c... Full story
