  • Deer pose highway danger

    Jim Cornelius|Updated May 13, 1997

Deer migrating to their summer range in the Sisters country must run a gauntlet of highways, crossing open pavement and dodging hurtling cars. Many don't make it. "Boy, they're just getting slaughtered out there," Sisters Police Lieutenant Rich Shawver told The Nugget. This is the most intensive period of summer deer migration, according to wildlife biologist Steve George of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. From now until mid-June, deer will be moving in large... Full story

  • Letters, letters, letters

    Updated May 13, 1997

    * * * To the Editor: As someone who's known David Haynes for over 30 years, I would suggest to the citizens of Sisters that you are the real losers by allowing your political leaders to eliminate such a fine officer from your city's service. You all need to ask those same leaders some hard questions and to let them know that the security of your community is more important than their floundering management. John Dimick * * * To the Editor: Last week I read in The Nugget that police Chief Haynes is on suspension till May 15... Full story

  •     Real Soup

    Melissa Ward|Updated May 13, 1997

On the Ascending of Spring, and Asparagus The warmth is real. Proven with greeny sprouts in a curved line under the hose where it snakes across the clearing to the water trough. Confirmed by the trees full of sweet and chatty young birds, discussing nesting, mates, and the local proliferation of cats. People are boldly exposing their soft, winter-pink knees and elbows in the afternoons. And others, those inclined to adopt seasonal uniforms, may be packing wistfully away, their antique wools, those sturdy and constant friends... Full story

  • Fly Lines

    John Judy|Updated May 13, 1997

There was a time when I thought of the natural world as stable. I was not so keenly aware of the power of catastrophic events. In an instant Mount St. Helens changes all that. After she blew her top, I could not look at the Cascades in the same way. I read about even bigger events, like Mount Mazama, and somehow the ground I was standing on didn't seem quite so stable. My view of rivers was a lot like my broader view of nature. I knew rivers were in a constant state of flux; continuously changing. They have to be changing or... Full story
