My wife Deirdre, son Izaak, and I are at mid-year in our first year of working at Taejon Christian International School in Daejeon, South Korea, and friends back in Sisters Country have asked what are favorite experiences have been thus far. There have been dozens of daily life experiences that are humorous and instructive, but there is one experience that has been the best so far. It is a story of homesickness, perseverance, and wonder. Only a week or so after we arrived in S... Full story
To the Editor: Our family moved to Oregon 2-1/2 years ago from California for our children to have a better education, better health and to explore all that Oregon has to offer. While looking at cities to live in we came across the beautiful little town of Sisters that we now call home. We chose Sisters because it was just where we imagined for our kids to grow up, explore and give back to the community. We found our home on Bluegrass Loop in the Crossroads neighborhood within an hour of looking and we knew this was it... Full story
As a result of the recent unseasonably warm weather, Sisters Trails Alliance (STA) "trail adopters" are reporting that the surfaces of the STA trail system are becoming unstable as the surface layers melt. A few inches down the ground remains frozen, preventing the melting ice and snow in the surface layer from draining properly. The result is a very unstable surface layer the consistency of mush in most places. "We are asking our trail users to avoid using the trails during this time, especially those using bikes and... Sisters Park & Recreation District kicked off the organization's annual Giving Donor Campaign this month. This campaign raised nearly $30,000 last year for the Bonnie Malone Scholarship Fund. Families must qualify for free and reduced lunch by standards set by the USDA. Typically the... Full story
Volunteers with the Cloverdale Rural Fire Protection District recently put a newer, safer, emergency vehicle on the street. Sisters Country folks may have seen the yellow four-wheel-drive 1997 International truck in the area. It was in this years' Rodeo parade, as well as the Christmas parade. The newer truck has allowed the volunteers to put a set of Holmatro hydraulic rescue tools (commonly referred to as the "Jaws of Life") in service. These tools were used for the first... Full story
I write today disappointed in a number of my Sisters Country neighbors. Much has been said about the Cyrus family's desire to complete development of the property surrounding Aspen Lakes. For full disclosure, as an employee of Aspen Lakes, I am an interested observer. I attended two of the workgroup meetings and was, frankly, appalled at some of the behavior I witnessed. Just to give you a little taste of the experience, I heard one attendee actually say - "let's go to the other side of the room, this side stinks" (she... Full story
The Lady Outlaws basketball team traveled to the coast to attend the Seaside Holiday Classic Tournament, held Thursday through Saturday, December 19-21. Sisters played well against top teams and earned a third-place finish. Madras took first place and Seaside was runner-up. Sisters defeated Newport 42-20 on Thursday in their first game of the tourney. It was a very physical match-up, and the Outlaws were a bit shell-shocked at the start. Newport jumped out quick and at the... Full story
The Outlaws competed in the Seaside Holiday Classic held Thursday through Saturday, December 19-21. Central Linn took championship honors and Elma finished second. Sisters suffered a heartbreaking loss to Elma at the start of the tournament. Elma's players were very big, with a very quick back court and three posts over 6'4" and one who loomed at 6'7". They ran several defenses and pressed the Outlaws the entire game. The Outlaws were behind for most of the contest but tied it up in the fourth quarter. Coach Rand Runco... Full story

Stewart's seed time was way ahead of her competition, and she came out smooth and confident for... Full story

Well-fed and healthy students are successful students. The Sisters School District (SSD) is taking nutrition and health programs seriously - so seriously that they have hired Audrey Tehan (SHS graduate of 2007) to get the new U.S. Department of Agriculture Community Food Projects Grant Farm-to-School program going in the SSD. Tehan explained "Farm-to-School turned into Seed-to-Table when the SSD and Sisters Science Club (SSC) got their heads together, collaborating with the... Full story

This holiday season, you've been invited to your granddaughter's home two states away. You haven't seen her in three years, so you decide to take the family on the road for a visit. You'd love to take your four-legged family member too, except for one major problem: Fido gets motion sickness and vomits in the car on trips more than 10 minutes away. Even though many people prefer to take their pets along, it's not always possible for numerous reasons. What options do you have... Full story
"What a grand time, such lovely music, and isn't that Irene something..." was the word at the end of the annual Christmas concert put on by the Sisters High Desert Chorale at Sisters Community Church last Friday and Sunday. One of the pieces the chorale spent a lot of time perfecting was the "Thirty Second Fa La La," by Donald Moore. Each time chorale director Irene Liden took them through it, she speeded it up a notch; after all, the singers had 30 seconds to get it done.... Full story
