The Timber Creek subdivision east of Sisters Elementary School looks like a peaceful neighborhood but a disagreement over a bridge is escalating. Right now, there is only one main access road for the more than 200 homes in that neighborhood. The original property owner agreed to build a bridge over Whychus Creek (formerly Squaw Creek) as part of the development agreement. But he has no plans to build the bridge. A proposed four-lane highway project on Highway 20 west of Sisters drew heavy fire from those who spoke at an open house held by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) at the Sisters Inn conference room on May 11. The David Letterman Show is coming to Sisters Rodeo with comedian Andy Kindler and a film crew. Letterman himself will not be part of this visit. A forest thinning project aimed at fuelsreduction and beetle control and forest thinning on acreage owned by Sisters School District north of the high school appears to have been a success. Scott Melcher, co-owner of Melcher Logging Co. of Sweet Home, gave the school board a detailed report of his company’s work on Monday, May 8. Local foresters want public input on a project to reduce fire hazards to subdivisions and stands of old-growth ponderosa pine trees. The Oregon Natural Resources Council and Warm Springs Forest Products Industries helped initiate the project near Black Butte Ranch. Sonrise Christian School students enjoyed rare visits from Queen Nefertiti, Lucille Ball, General George S. Patton and other greats in history at their annual Living History Museum. Fans enjoyed a barnburner finish when the Sisters girls softball team defeated North Marion 9-8 at home on Tuesday, May 9, in extra innings. Jeff Minke and Evan Sims, Sisters’ number-one doubles players, took third at the Boys Special District 2 Tennis Tournament at Central High School on Monday and Tuesday, May 8-9, to lead the Outlaws to a fourth place finish. The Sisters boys lacrosse team continued to dominate league play, defeating Marist 6-3 at home on Tuesday, May 9, and Summit 12-4 two days later. Sisters’ game with Marist was evidence of what should prove to be a great rivalry considering the fact Sisters and Marist will be in the same conference next year. Heritage USA Antiques and Crafters Market is celebrating a milestone: 10 years in business in Sisters. Mark and Diane Bremer opened the doors on March 30, 1996. At the time, the couple was moving and awaiting the birth of their third child as well as opening a new business. Congratulations to Lizzie Martin, whose 18-hole score of 95 earned her medalist honors at the Girls Golf nine team tournament held May 2, at Aspen Lakes Golf Course. Although she has had previous top three finishes, this was Lizzie’s first win. A 16-year-old sophomore, Lizzie plays in the No. 1 position for Portland’s Wilson High School. The boys golf team reached their goal of bringing home the first place trophy from the Capital Conference District Tournament at the Arrowhead Golf Course in Molalla. While the PRCA Sisters Rodeo is the third largest rodeo in Oregon in terms of the money paid contestants (behind the Pendleton Roundup and the St. Paul Rodeo) it’s number one in another way. Sisters High School Varsity Jazz Band was awarded first place for the second consecutive year at the 23rd annual Northwest Jazz Band Festival. The high school and middle school jazz band program attended the festival competition on May 6, at Mt. Hood Community College.
