    After decades of debate, Sisters has taken the plunge and approved the funding of a municipal sewer system. Unofficial results as of 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, showed that Sisters voters decided by a 197-117 margin to approve $7 million in revenue bonds for the project. The remainder of the $12.1 million project is to be funded through grants.   • Several badly hurt in Highway 20 wreck

    A wreck at the intersection of Cloverdale Road and Highway 20 sent four people to the hospital with moderate to very serious injuries Monday afternoon, May 18. According to sheriff's department reports, the accident occurred when an eastbound 1990 Chevrolet pick-up truck driven by Dan McManus, 31, of Redmond, started to make a left turn onto Cloverdale Road in front of a westbound car driven by Steven R.   • Depression takes life of Sisters man

    The disease of depression took the life of Edward H. Benton, whose body was found on Wednesday, May 13, near the junction of Squawback and Indian Ford roads. Ed, 74, had been taking medication, but there were difficulties in treating a variety of symptoms. According to sheriff's department reports, Benton apparently committed suicide. Ed was last seen at 11:30 p.m. on Monday. He was reported missing from his home at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Deschutes County Search and Rescue was notified at 1 p.m. Tuesday.   • Man arrested in child sex abuse case

    Sisters sheriff's deputies arrested Clinton William Cooper, 43, on Saturday, May 16, for allegedly sexually molesting two young children over a period of several months. According to sheriff's department reports, the children disclosed the abuse to their mother, who attempted to confront Cooper about the abuse. When she discovered that he had apparently left Sisters, she reported the abuse to police. After an investigation, Cooper was arrested on three counts of first degree sex abuse, a Class B felony, and lodged on $60,000... Full story

  • Scenic gateway planned

    The east end of Sisters will have a vastly different look, with the completion of a Forest Service project at the intersection of Highways 20 and 242. As part of the National Forest Scenic Byway program, an interpretive portal will be developed for the McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway. The "East Portal" will mark the byway's eastern gateway and will be located just inside the Sisters city limits. The project went to bid in April, and work could begin as early as June 1.   • Johnson earns Eagle Scout award

    Casey Johnson, 18, of Sisters, Oregon, has earned the highest advanced award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, the Eagle Award. A member of Troop #20 of Salem, Johnson is one of approximately 2.5 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank, according to Scoutmaster Byron Meadows. Johnson has been involved in scouting for 12 years.   • Sisters community assists fire victims

    Dan and Kelley McVey and their children were left with nothing but their car and the clothes on their backs by a fire that gutted their home at 435 N. Tamarack on Tuesday, May 12. According to Sisters' fire chief Don Mouser, "the most probable cause was a flue fire." Mouser said "they had a fire in the stove that morning," a fire which, Mouser said, was apparently left burning when the McVey's left the house.     There's an Ian Tyson song, "Since the rain things look so much better ... Hills are turning green; the greenest green you've ever seen."
