  • Camp Sherman revisits the Civil War

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated May 19, 2015

Visitors to House on Metolius in Camp Sherman last weekend stepped back in time to 1861-65. Infantry advanced and retreated across the meadow under clouds of pungent powder smoke from artillery fire and musketry; cavalry scouts loped through the greening grass as flags of the United States and the Confederate States of America flapped in a stiff, chilly breeze over canvas tents of the opposing armies' encampments. The occasion was the second annual Northwest Civil War Council... Full story

  • Council taps Bill Hall for open seat

    Sue Stafford|Updated May 19, 2015

On the table at the home of newly appointed Sisters City Councilor Bill Hall sat a three-ring binder at least four inches thick with his name in big black letters across the front. Hall indicated he was doing his homework, familiarizing himself with the hundreds of pages in the orientation manual so he will be up to speed by the time of his swearing-in on Thursday, May 28. Hall has served recently as the chair of the City's Community Assets Committee. The new councilor and his... Full story

    Sue Stafford|Updated May 19, 2015

A two-year grant-funded experiment with back-in diagonal parking on Main Avenue is coming to an end, following a unanimous vote by Sisters City Council. At their May 14 meeting, Council approved City Ordinance No. 459, which amends the Sisters Comprehensive Land Use Plan and Transportation System Plan (TSP) by eliminating policy references associated with back-in diagonal parking. The City will begin re-striping parking along Main Avenue - back to conventional parking. Public... Full story

  • A right to privacy for BBR residents

    Isolde Hedemark|Updated May 19, 2015

It is with great dismay that I watch the ongoing written battle of opponents and proponents of a proposed bike trail between Sisters and Black Butte Ranch in Nugget publications. Inaccuracies, rude language and accusations are bad enough, but the notion that trespassing onto Black Butte Ranch's private property should be condoned because "parking and biking" has been going on for a long time, is particularly bothersome. The only public part of the Ranch's bike path system runs from the east gate to the west gate and to the... Full story

  • SHS students get close to nature

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated May 19, 2015

"I have witnessed many students who struggle with depression and low self-esteem develop a more confident and optimistic voice while spending time writing poetry and/or songs out in nature. "Writing alongside the creek seems to breathe fresh air into students' perspectives about themselves and their place in the world. As in one of the group's songs, 'My Waters My Winds' the students' wrote, 'And the river says, No longer are you what the world tells you but what you tell the... Full story

  • Coffee kiosk reopens in new spot

    Diane Goble, Correspondent|Updated May 19, 2015

The popular Huckleberry Bush coffee kiosk is back in business. The owner, Tiffany Adrian, at the end of her first week said, "We had a great turnout and our grand opening was quite successful." This kiosk on wheels had been parked in the precarious traffic lane off Highway 20 in front of the Shell station. Cars occasionally rammed the structure, so a better location would have been desirous, but the kiosk was there when she bought the business in March 2014. A few months... Full story

  • Getting dental hygiene to seniors

    Updated May 19, 2015

As we age or become homebound due to illness, one of the things that often get neglected is dental hygiene. Even being in a wheelchair, it's next to impossible to get yourself to a dentist's office, much less into a dental chair to have any work done on your teeth. To the rescue is Linda Robinson, a registered dental hygienist with an expanded practice permit, who provides in-home dental hygiene care. She has 35 years experience in dental hygiene, including the last 14 years in Bend. She recently branched out on her own... Full story

The new gallery, located at the corner of Hood Avenue and Elm Street, features art that is crafted out of materials that others have discarded. Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated May 19, 2015

"Transferring knowledge from the classroom to the real world is sometimes difficult for a 'tweenager' to process," says Sisters Middle School (SMS) teacher Becky Aylor. Enter outdoor school. Last week, facilitator Brad Tisdel, SMS teachers, and high-school-age counselors took the SMS sixth-grade class to Camp Tadmore in Sweet Home for three days of full-immersion education - outside, in the elements. It is an exceptional combination of fun and games, bonding and team-building... Full story

  • Let your flag fly

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated May 19, 2015

So there I was, driving down Fir Street last Friday, about to turn into Melvin's for some of Cody's deeee-licious clam chowder, and as I looked up at Old Glory waving from the old post office flag pole something else caught my eye - a red shirt right below it. "What in the..." I said to myself, and looked again. Sure enough the shirt was still there. So, to make sure it was what I thought it was, I took a gander through my binocs: For sure, it was a wild, red, faded, worn-out... Full story

The boys tennis team competed under miserable weather conditions at the 4A/3A//2A/1A District 3 Tennis tournament Sunday through Tuesday, May 10-12. Teams only got in 45 minutes of play on Sunday before the skies opened the floodgates and brought play to an abrupt end. Some matches were played in Redmond, and then teams were forced to indoor courts in Bend. As miserable as Sunday was, Monday was worse. Jodi Schneider, Correspondent|Updated May 19, 2015

It's your normal morning routine; Fido gets to go on his long morning walk and get the exercise he needs to keep fit. Meanwhile your indoor Kitty is curled up in her favorite chair, not burning any calories. With little to do all day she is getting downright portly, and out of boredom she's eating more from her food dish that is always full of kibble. The number of overweight cats is at an all-time high, according to annual survey conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity... Full story

  • Living fully with the fear of death

    Katy Yoder|Updated May 19, 2015

Recently, a friend shared that she was in a dreadful holding pattern waiting to hear if a pain she's having in her ribs is bone cancer. She is terror with a calm exterior. Hearing her talk reminded me of my own fears about cancer coming back. How do cancer survivors handle the fear of reoccurrence? I believe what we focus on can manifest, so it's important to be aware of the underlying thoughts I'm harboring that could do me harm. The fear lies in wait, submerged in my psyche, just below the surface, waiting to burst through... Full story
