  • Traditional Memorial Day gathering will not go forward

    Due to COVID-19-related restrictions, Sisters’ traditional Memorial Day observance has been significantly altered. No public gathering will occur on Monday, May 25. A small group limited to 10 veterans will conduct a 15-minute ceremony at the Village Green in remembrance of fallen service members from all of America’s wars. The Nugget will publish biographical information on World War II veteran Leon Devereaux, as well as the names of the Sisters veterans who passed over the past year in the edition of May 27.... Full story

    As a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Forest Service, I thought I had seen a lot in my career: fires, floods, furloughs, drug cartels, timber thefts, daring rescues and tragic fatalities.   • Outdoor burning will remain closed

    The Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District will keep outdoor debris burning closed for the remainder of the spring burning season. Outdoor debris burning is now scheduled to reopen in the fall, after the fire season ends. Deschutes County fire departments closed burning on April 10, when the impacts of the COVID pandemic were not fully known. Fire departments were seeing an increase in escaped fires as a result of outdoor debris burning, and were concerned about the health impacts of smoke on vulnerable populations. Also, in... Full story
