  • Memorial Day service set at Village Green Park

    The 13th annual Memorial Day Ceremony in honor of fallen military men and women will be held on Monday, May 30 at the Village Green starting at 11 a.m. The ceremony has been moved from its previous location at Camp Polk Cemetery to better accommodate attendees. The guest speaker will be Gene Whisnant, State Representative of District 53. A military exercise will be conducted by the Naval Junior ROTC from Crook County High School in Prineville.   • Firefighters schedule major drill on July 20

    The Outlaws baseball team defeated Cascade 4-1 at North Marion (neutral site) on Friday, May 20 despite the brutal weather conditions that delayed the game. When the Outlaws arrived at North Marion for their inter-league playoff game against Cascade, rain was coming down in torrents. The field had been tarped and hopes were the rain would let up and the game would be played. Finally, there was a break in the weather and the tarps were removed.   • School calendar questioned by some

    Is an early start for the school year bad for business? It may be if your business hires a lot of high school kids during the summer. The biggest operation of that type in Sisters appears to be Ray’s Food Place. That’s why Ray’s manager Jeff McDonald recently called Chamber of Commerce Manager Cheryl Rhea and asked the chamber to do a survey of its members on the issue.   • Anderson coaches vaulters to new heights

    As a seventh-grader-to-be in Baker, Oregon, in the spring of 1949, Jim Anderson saw some high school kids pole vaulting at the high school track across the street from his house and immediately, as he puts it, “lost my heart to it.” “When we moved to a place with a little acreage a short time later I would use a wooden rail from the corral to vault with because it’s all I could come up with,” he said.   • Lady Outlaws bag win in last softball game

    Senior Cortney Peters carried her team to an 8-7 victory in the girls’ last softball game of the season at home against the Stayton Eagles on Monday, May 16. Peters hit three doubles in three at bats. Stayton got off to a quick start with two runs on five hits in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Sisters battled back with great energy to score a run in the bottom of the first. Cindy Harp singled and then Peters doubled to the right center wall to knock Harp in and close the Eagle lead to 2-1.     Senior Scott Little was the lone representative for the boys Outlaws golf team at the State Championships this year, which were held at Eagle Ridge on Monday and Tuesday, May 16-17. Little played steady golf both days earning a two-day total of 163. Scott scored an 83 on day one and bettered his score by three strokes on day two with an 80. Little finished 19th out of 75 golfers. Jesse Schuette of Siuslaw High School was the medalist for the tournament with a two-day total of 139.   • Mystery skull investigation by lone detective takes a new turn

    An investigation directed at identifying a skull found near Camp Sherman last fall has now shifted away from focusing on a black transient male seen in Sisters and Bend in the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to Detective Scott Farrell of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.   • Three baseball players earn all league honors

    Jeff Fitter, Andy Burke and Blake Poynor all earned first team all league honors for their performance this season. Fitter earned first team all league as pitcher. “Jeff was a workhorse for us this year,” said Coach Kevin Bigby. “He threw about 50 innings and had an ERA of 3.37. He ended the season 4-5 but was involved in several games that came down to one or two runs which could have easily gone either way.” Andy Burke took first team honors at infield.   • Deputies clamp down on teenage drinking

    The woods around Sister are a regular party spot for Sisters teens, a haven for underage drinkers. But Sisters area sheriff’s deputies know all those party spots, too, and in recent weeks they have issued numerous citations for Minors in Possession of Alcohol. Over the past two months Sisters deputies have issued 21 MIP citations. Many more teens have escaped into the woods at the deputies’ approach.   • Planners take tough stance on Hayden Homes development

    Hayden Homes’ bid to build a 400-unit housing development near Sisters Middle School is riding a bumpy road. At a meeting of the planning commission Thursday night, the Sisters Planning Department recommended that the Planning Commission deny the application to build 400 new homes west of town. Senior Planning Director Bill Adams addressed the Planning Commission and a packed City Hall: “Maybe the applicants are trying to put a square peg in a round hole,” he said.     Four players from the girls’softball team earned all league awards this season, including Cortney Peters, Crystal Jewell, Sammy Stoneback and Becky Bremer. Senior and first baseman Cortney Peters was named second team all league.
