The new Peterson Ridge Trail is officially open. A crowd gathered at Village Green Park Saturday to celebrate and honor those involved with the planning and construction of the new and expanded trails. They were there not only as hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, but because many of them had worked on the trail. Some Sisters School District Budget Committee members are advocating wielding the budget knife more aggressively this year. At the May 19 budget committee meeting, citizen member Matt Cyrus, this time backed by citizen members Darren Layne and Tim Larson, once again raised prospect of making deeper cuts this year to avoid "falling off a cliff" with next year's projected additional budget cuts of between $900,000 and $1.5 million. The Sisters Elementary School Garden Fair was a blooming success despite having to move festivities inside due to decidedly un-spring-like weather. "I was really pleased with the turnout," said Shannon Pollard, one of the original founders of the school's garden club. The group made about $3,300 after costs. To the Editor: I've read the article regarding the $30,000 for a part-time economic development director several times and still cannot understand what the problem is with setting that money aside for more actively attracting additional stores and manufacturers to Sisters. ("Will Sisters get an economic development director?" The Nugget, May 19, page 16.) During tough economic times, everyone is grateful to receive a helping hand. Last Saturday, the City of Sisters received 60 helping hands from high school and middle school students when they spent their day painting 14 picnic benches at the Village Green Park and cleaning up pine needles at the Three Sisters Overnight Park. Susan Ruettgers is proof of an old truism: the harder she worked, the luckier she got. Ruettgers, a senior at Sisters High School, recently signed with Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, on a basketball scholarship. Sisters' traditional Memorial Day observances are set for Monday, May 31, at 11 a.m. at Sisters Village Green. Local veterans' organizations sponsor the event which honors those who have died in America's wars. Three Pearl Harbor survivors will be on hand for the services, along with an Oregon National Guard soldier who has just returned from deployment to Iraq. A 28-year-old man was arrested for drunk driving and recklessly endangering his passengers. A man faked going into a gas station mart to pay for his gas and took off without paying. McKenzie Cooper drove in two runs with two out in the bottom of the seventh to give the Sisters High School's varsity softball team a 13-12 victory over the Midwestern League champion Thursday, May 19. Marine Tresnie, foreign exchange student from Belgium, competed at the 4A/3A/2A/1A state tennis tournament held Thursday through Saturday, May 20-22, at the University of Oregon, and performed well. Tresnie played Thursday at 5 p.m. and won the pigtail round to qualify to play in the main draw. Marine overpowered Kellie Hodges of Umatilla and easily won in two sets with scores of 6-0, 6-0. Weather as diverse as the class of Sisters Middle School sixth-graders didn't dampen spirits at the sixth-grade Outdoor School last week. Rain, wind, sun and even snow visited the group of approximately 100 students and a record 28 counselors at Camp Caldera, where the activity was held last Monday through Thursday. Junior Ben Fullhart made a good showing at his first appearance at the boys 4A tennis state championships, held May 20-22 at the University of Oregon. Fullhart won two consecutive matches in consolation before he lost in the semi-final round. Fullhart started out on Thursday with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 win over Jordan Curtis of Baker in the pigtail match. Fullhart and Curtis play similar games, which turned out to be tough for both players. The boys lacrosse team lost 7-6 to Harney County in the first round of playoffs on Friday, May 14, which brought their season to an end. Three days earlier, the Outlaws suffered a 4-1 loss to Summit in their last league game of the season. Coach Bill Rexford told The Nugget that his team tried very hard to get a win over Harney in Friday's matchup but just had an off day. Still, the Outlaws never gave up. The Outlaws baseball team shut out Cascade 4-0 at Stayton in the first round of the 4A Boys State Tournament on Friday, May 21. Sisters advanced to the second round to take on Siuslaw in Florence on Tuesday, May 25. Four rain delays resulted in a three-and-a-half-hour game against Cascade. Senior Stephanie Cole played in her final match of the year at the 4A/3A/2A/1A Girls State Golf Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, May 17-18, at the Eagle Crest Resort Course. Cole, in her second state tournament appearance, carded a 103 both days of the tournament to finish in the middle of the pack. The Sisters Stampede thunders onto local trails for its inaugural two-wheeled showdown 11 a.m., Sunday, May 30. Jeff Fought and Jonathan Standen represented Sisters at the 4A boys' golf state championships held at the Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell on Monday and Tuesday, May 17-18. Sisters resident Penny Whipps has launched a nonprofit company called Just One Time (Just1x). Whipps' son Kyle died on September 6, 2008 of an accidental heroin overdose. Senior pitcher/outfielder Dara Kosanke was named the Sky-Em League's Player of the Year. The Sisters High School right-hander was a force both on the mound and at the plate. She led the Sky-Em in hitting with a .675 average, base hits with 27, runs scored with 23, on-base percentage at .690 and stolen bases with 20. That was all accomplished in 12 league games. Madeline Emily Grimstad, age 85, passed away Friday, May, 7, 2010 due to multiple health issues. She was born March 10, 1925 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada to Isabel and Arthur Carroll. Madeline Carroll and Gerrie Knudsen, high school sweethearts, were married in 1945 and had two sons, Bob, currently of Richland, Washington and Bruce, currently of Tigard. Wallace Stanley Bailey passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, peacefully at his home in Sisters. He was 75 years old. Wallace was born in Albany on May 7, 1935 to parents Herbert and Martha Bailey. He also had two brothers, Stanley Bailey and Omar Bailey, who preceded him in death. Wally worked most of his life in the lumber industry, moving to Sisters in 1989 where he went to work in Bend for The Truax Corporation, later going to work for Llama Woods Farms, a job he enjoyed...
