  • Fly lines

    John Judy|Updated May 26, 1998

Ephemerella Proserpina - the Green Drake. Perhaps it seems strange that a guy could wax poetic over a bug, but these creatures really are quite special and quite beautiful in their own way. They have the a graceful long slender curved body, thin delicate tails, and tall upright slate gray wings. The thorax is a dark green, the abdomen lighter olive, with a very distinct dark green banding. On many specimens there is a splash of yellowish orange right at the base of the wing. If you handle them carefully they'll sit quietly... Full story

  • Sisters hit by car clouts

    Updated May 26, 1998

Thieves entered four vehicles at Sisters Car Care sometime overnight on May 20-21, stealing stereo equipment, tools and fishing reels. According to sheriff's reports, the cars were parked in a fenced area which had inadvertently been unlocked. The vehicles, too, were unlocked. During the same time frame, according to police, someone threw a softball-sized rock through the windshield of a vehicle parked near the auto shop at Sisters High School. Sergeant Rich Shawver of the Sisters sheriff's station, said that Sisters area... Full story

  • Sisters will keep sheriff's patrol deputies

    Jim Cornelius|Updated May 26, 1998

Calls for sheriff's deputies outside Sisters may go mostly unheeded this summer, as patrols are cut way back due to lack of funds. But the failure of the continued sheriff's operating levy won't affect patrols inside the City of Sisters, because the city is paying for those patrols under contract with the sheriff's department. According to Sheriff Greg Brown, all the Sisters deputies will stay on the job at least until a new levy can be put to voters on September 15. Permanent... Full story

  • Ceremony honors those on the fighting edge

    Fran Schupp|Updated May 26, 1998

Sisters area veterans honored their fallen comrades in the sixth annual Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony held Monday, May 25 at Camp Polk Cemetery. The ceremony was attended by about 70 people. Just as the ceremony began, the sun broke through an overcast sky, to brighten the flowers that marked the graves. A light breeze touched the American flag and the POW-MIA flag and the sunlight shone on the wreath that contained the names of 38 veterans whose service dates from World War I to Desert Storm. Following the Pledge of... Full story

  • East is east and west is west

    Updated May 26, 1998

An alert reader noted that the caption and lead for the story "Scenic gateway planned" (The Nugget, May 20, p. 1) inadvertently swapped the points of the compass. While the junction of highways 20 and 242 will mark the east portal of the McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic By-way, the infamous "Y" still lies at the west end of Sisters. The Nugget regrets any confusion or disorientation caused by the error.... Full story

A suspected case of tick-borne Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever has been reported at Camp Sherman. Randy Trass, a 43-year old builder living in Camp Sherman was hospitalized for five days at St. Charles Medical Center with symptoms suggestive of RMSF. Signs of the disease usually begin 3 to 12 days after a tick bite or after tick feces is rubbed into the... Full story

  • Libraries win then lose

    Jim Cornelius|Updated May 26, 1998

Supporters of a county-wide library tax district won big at the polls Tuesday, May 19, then saw their victory evaporate in the face of low voter turnout. The proposed library district garnered 62 percent of the votes cast, but with less than 50 percent of registered voters turning out to cast their ballot, the measure fell short of the "double majority" requirement established by Measure 47/50 for tax elections. Measure 53, which would have repealed the double majority require... Full story

  • Letters, letters, letters

    Updated May 26, 1998

    * * * To the Editor: Well, goody, goody. Bet all of the developers and commercial land owners are happy. Sisters is getting a sewer. Ah, yes. Growth! And development! Powerful words. Truly, the two things that destroyed the American West. "Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey. Let the demolition and destruction begin! Cheers. Kris Nirenberg * * * To the Editor: With the second annual Sisters Starry Nights Concert Series now behind us, I would like to express my appreciation to the... Full story
