  • Our stories

    Sue Stafford|Updated Dec 26, 2017

A statistic the other day on the news caught my attention. The average lifespan in the U.S. dropped for the second year in a row to 81.1 for women. Based on that, I can expect 7.5 more years at least. If that time goes as quickly as the past seven-and-a-half years, I'll be done before I know it. The beginning of a new year is a good time for some self-reflection about my remaining years. What pops to the surface is, I want my remaining time to make a difference, however... Full story

  • New Year's resolutions

    Andrew Loscutoff|Updated Dec 26, 2017

Christmas is in the rear-view mirror; soon it will be New Year's. It's time to partake in the American tradition of retrospection about the past year, and vows to improve in the coming year. We're swearing off the indulgent foods and lack of exercise once the new year begins. 2018 will be a milestone of personal health and fitness. If this sort of talk sounds familiar, it's because there are millions of others doing the same thing. New Year's resolutions are often dreamt during the blood-sugar spikes of the holiday eating... Full story

  • Ed O'Farrell's midnight ride

    Craig Rullman|Updated Dec 26, 2017

On a recent research trip into the Nevada outback, Nugget editor Jim Cornelius and I had occasion to stop for a few minutes in Silver Lake, to pay our respects at a monument in the local cemetery. Ten feet high, unprepossessing, the monument was erected in 1898, to remember the victims of Oregon's deadliest fire. The Silver Lake Fire of 1894 isn't really the stuff of a Christmas column, except that in the midst of an agonizing tragedy there were also towering acts of... Full story

  • The curse of comparison

    Audry Van Houweling, PMHNP|Updated Dec 26, 2017

It is human nature to compare ourselves against others. There has always been a pressure from generation to generation to "keep up with the Joneses." Of course, who the "Joneses" are has changed over time. For instance, you have had to replace those lovely harvest gold and avocado appliances once so chic with white or black and then to stainless-steel, and now somehow smart appliances that can order your milk for you. The way in which we compare has also changed. If we go back a century, our means to compare was based... Full story
