  • Rider injured in horse wreck

    A 41-year-old man was badly injured when his horse rolled on him west of Sisters on Saturday, May 26. According to Deschutes County Sheriff's Office reports, Gary Dahlquist was hurt near Graham Horse Corral early Saturday afternoon. Dispatch received a cell phone call reporting the incident. With the GPS coordinates given by the reporting party, Black Butte Ranch Fire and Search and Rescue personnel were able to quickly locate the injured party in a large meadow approximately a half-mile mile from Graham Corral.   • Fire district starts clearing site

    Boards cracked, metal groaned as a backhoe tore into old buildings behind Sisters Fire Hall on Sunday, May 27. The Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District has begun clearing the site for a major expansion of its facilities. The project, which normally would cost many thousands of dollars, is all being completed with volunteer labor with the help of a number of local businesses that are chipping in to donate equipment and services.   • Firefighters contain pair of wildfires

    Two wildfires that broke out on Sunday a few miles northeast of Sisters were contained by Monday morning. The cool night temperatures and calming winds helped firefighters gain the upper hand on the blazes off of Wilt Road. "The (Wilt) Fire was just a little over 100 acres (as of noon on Monday), and they have it mostly contained," said Captain Gary Lovegren of the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District (RFPD).   • Firefighters knock down blaze near Sisters

    Quick action by firefighters from the Oregon Department of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service kept a blaze at the south end of Sisters to less than a quarter-acre on Thursday, May 24. The fire occured around noon just south of the Buck Run subdivision near the Locust Street gate on the road leading to the Sisters wastewater treatment facility.     The second order of business for the Sisters City Council after the pledge of allegiance last Thursday night was to appoint Shawna Bell as a councilor. Bell took the oath of office to fill the position that was recently vacated through the resignation of Judy Trego.   • Hasli the dog helps Hospice patients

    Assistance is available for the asking in Sisters to those with both critical and terminal illnesses. Some 80 Hospice of Redmond-Sisters volunteers serve the needs of both patients and their caregivers on a daily basis. At least one of those volunteers is four-legged. Hasli, an 85-pound yellow Labrador, is a Pet Partner.     A calm and cool morning greeted the crowd that gathered to honor the American fallen in the 139th observance of this national day of remembrance. The day originally was set aside as a day of remembrance for the Union Soldiers who had died during the Civil War. It later grew to encompass all fallen American soldiers from all conflicts.     To the Editor: Congratulations to the District Champion Sisters High School Equestrian team for this year's number-two finish at state. The Equestrian Drill Team, that was also first at District, finished fourth out of 22 teams from around the state. Their performance was outstanding and an excellent display of choreographed horsemanship. I applaud the Sisters Rodeo Association for its support of the drill team by letting it perform at last year's rodeo. Their performance was one of the rodeo's highlights.   • Students receive jazz scholarships

    Nine Sisters students have received scholarships to jazz workshops this summer. Seven will be traveling to the University of Oregon for the week-long Jazz Improvisation Workshop. Wes Ford, a sophomore, and his brother Trevor, a seventh grader, are two of the the seven.     Wuanita (Nita) Quisenberry Sturm of Bend died of natural causes on May 22. She was 88. She was born in Simpsonville, Kentucky to Henry Thornton Quisenberry and Mary M. Griffith A service will be held at 3 p.m. on June 2, at Awbrey House Assisted Living. She married Alois Sturm in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 11, 1951. She was a homemaker. She loved her family, played bingo and card games, enjoyed RV travel and was a wonderful cook. She and her husband relocated to Bend in 2000 to be near their son Hank Fegette.   • Kindergarten enrollment is down for next year in Sisters

    The Sisters School District will open its doors with one less kindergarten class when school starts in September. Superintendent Ted Thonstad estimates the district will have approximately 60 kindergartners, about 24 students less than this year. One full-day and two half-day classes are planned for next year. This year the district has two all-day and two half-day classes. "This year we have 84 (students), and next year we're talking about 60," Thonstad said.     Sisters' 55-and-older set came together for a meal like never before a week ago Saturday night. A four-course "Krazy Dinner" followed by a crazy style show provided an evening of good old-fashioned fun and laughter for Sisters Saturday Night Alive group.     The Outlaws lacrosse team's dream season was brought to an end when they lost 6-12 to the Sunset Apollos at home on Monday, May 21.
