If there are not major changes in expenditures, the City of Sisters could be perilously close to a significant budget crisis. A summary spreadsheet developed by councilor David Asson and budget committee member Andrew Gorayeb offers a "fresh look" at the city budget. If the analysis bears out, the budget as proposed for the 2011-2012 year is running at a deficit of over $500,000. The $28-million reserve built up during the housing boom through 2009 is down to under $4 million today. At the projected "burn rate," the... Full story

Spirits were sky high for the second annual Sisters Stampede Mountain Bike Race on Sunday, with another record entry from across the state for an event that is now firmly geared into Sisters' roster of signature events. Race founder Joel Palanuk hustled around the start/finish line moments before the race began, all smiles and few worries as the sea of... Full story

Sisters Rodeo is one of the most successful rodeos in the Columbia River Circuit - and on the West Coast. The rodeo produces an extremely popular four-day event, run as efficiently as a hospital and as crisply as a Las Vegas stage show. The rodeo's board of directors says, without qualification, that it is because of the willingness of 200 members who volunteer their time on Saturdays, beginning in March, to do repairs, build new features and maintain the grounds. Then they do their real job, volunteering at the rodeo. At the... Full story
To The Editor, On May 27, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a landmark case, ruled against the Veterans Administration (VA), citing "consistent incompetence" against veterans in delaying, postponing, and denying claims. In Sisters there is a small cadre of veterans helping veterans get through the VA process. They are led by Tom Salgado, who is not a veteran but has been honored by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars for his longstanding efforts to help veterans. Over the years we have witnessed numerous transgressions... Full story

For years, the loop trail around the edge of Suttle Lake has suffered significant damage from erosion and heavy traffic. Because the lake is popular for fishing and boating and is surrounded by campgrounds, a resort, youth camps, and a host of other recreational opportunities, the trail is one of the most heavily used in the Sisters Ranger District. Because the trail hugs the shoreline so closely, there isn't much vegetation to hold the soils in place; and the constant... Full story

The lingering heavy snowpack in the high country has set me to looking about for early season hiking alternatives. One such hike recently came to my attention; and, although I am tempted to classify it as an urban hike, it still offers a welcome alternative to a steady diet of hiking in the desert country. At the western edge of Bend, Shevlin Park sports a completely snow-free venue for hiking, along with a beautiful stream and towering conifer trees. Guide books list the loop... Full story

Gladstone started the scoring with a big two-RBI double to deep center in the top of the second. At the top of the fourth inning the Gladiators had pushed to a 4-0 lead over the Outlaws. Sisters answered back in the... Full story
This concludes Jim Anderson's account of his trip to the Galapagos Islands. We traveled across the equator four times in our explorations of the Galapagos Islands. Each island we visited opened another door to the unique geology and life of the Galapagos. We arrived at the north end of Isabela Island and walked among the marine iguanas. It was astounding. In some places it was almost impossible to see the black lava beneath them, they were so numerous. Obtaining a close-up... Full story
