    Ron Thorkildson|Updated Dec 31, 2013

Is Old Man Winter getting senile? After an uneventful and quite dry November, the elderly gentleman responsible for the coldest season of the year began to focus on the task at hand. On December 1, a snappy little storm blew through Central Oregon, toppling trees onto structures, blocking roads and causing scattered power outages. Two days later a 3-to-5-inch snowfall blanketed Sisters Country followed by an intense blast of arctic air from the far north. The 10-day cold... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 01/01/2014

    Updated Dec 31, 2013

To the Editor: Regarding vandalism to mailboxes in neighborhoods north of Sisters: We live on a street with wonderful neighbors. We decided to create unique and whimsical newspaper boxes to replace the not-so-unique white standard ones you are given by The Bulletin. This made our street a little more special and fun. What is sad is that someone or ones decided to take that away. Some of the widows in the neighborhood no longer feel safe, and another couple is now thinking of moving to a retirement home, as they don't want to... Full story

  • When barking becomes a nuisance

    Jodi Schneider, Correspondent|Updated Dec 31, 2013

How many times have you gone on a pleasant walk by yourself or with your pooch only to hear rowdy barking through a fence or from across the street and have it continue until you're out of earshot? Barking is natural; it's how dogs communicate with each other and with you. Sometimes we want our dogs to bark in order to warn us of potential danger or that someone is on the property. • Of a certain age...

    Diane Goble|Updated Dec 31, 2013

As I'm writing this, I'm looking at the next rung on the ladder knowing I have to take the next step tomorrow ... 71 ... 72. OMG, how did this happen? A minute ago I was 22 and had my whole life in front of me. Now ... not so much. Somehow in my mind I'm still 22, but then I pass by a mirror and wonder who that gray-haired, wrinkled old lady is. It's scary, but I have to admit: It be me. Always athletic - an avid water-skier, state-champion swimmer in high school, SCUBA diver - rarely got out of the water before I was 22.... Full story

Two local birders observed the swan on Christmas Day; it appeared to have a serious mouth injury and was clearly unable to eat or groom itself. The birders called Elise Wolf of Grebe Acres seeking help for the injured bird. "Fishing lures and lines are a big reason waterbirds can require rescuing," Wolf told The Nugget. Last year Wolf rescued a... Full story
