  • Two lives saved as fire razes home

    Eric Dolson|Updated Jun 4, 1996

Two people are alive today because an alert--and experienced--citizen pulled them from a burning home just seconds before the entire structure exploded into deadly flames. Bob Williamson, 37, of Tollgate, had gone to Ray's Food Place to buy is morning copy of The Oregonian from the boxes outside the store. He saw dark smoke over in The Pines, the subdivision just to the west, and at first thought someone was burning tires. But Williamson, who used to work for the Portland Fire Bureau, decided it looked more like a house fire... Full story

  • Pine Meadow Ranch zone change appealed

    Jim Hollon|Updated Jun 4, 1996

A citizens' group has appealed a zone change ruling on the proposed Pine Meadow Ranch development just west of the Sisters city limits. The Alliance for Responsible Land Use in Deschutes County filed an application late last week to appeal the recent decision by county hearings officer Karen Green which favored a zone change on 50 acres of the ranch. The application was signed by William H. Boyer, Sisters. The zone change would take the land out of an urban area reserve classification and change it to urban area standard... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor

    Updated Jun 4, 1996

Cooley should serve his term...in jail Wes Cooley should go to jail, not back to Congress. Cooley is a compulsive liar who has falsified loan documents, lied under oath about his education, falsified his place of residency to run for Congress, cheated a ranch hand by paying slave wages while claiming the employee as a dependent on his taxes, dishonored veterans by claiming assignment to Korea and generally brought dishonor and shame to all of Oregon east of the Cascades. Now it is up to law enforcement and Oregon's Secretary... Full story

  • On the Spirit of Enterprise

    Melissa Ward|Updated Jun 4, 1996

The season of loose dirt has arrived. Odd little boot-sculpted things that travel readily indoors to crush and crunch underfoot, happily prove that the earth's crust is indeed on the move. Primary agents in this particular migration are children in the thrall of early spring, faithfully drawn to the spongey, gritty masses of awakening topsoil that hover magnetically outside all the meticulous landscaping we might have carefully planned specifically to prevent the literal and random sanding of our floors by the old waffle... Full story

  • New method used to build Buck Run home

    Jim Hollon|Updated Jun 4, 1996

Imagine a home constructed largely of Styrofoam pellets that can be built quickly with less labor, insulates twice as well as wood-frame construction and can be covered with stucco, wood siding or brick veneer. You don't have to imagine. Just drive out to Buck Run and take a look at John and Sarah Rahm's new 3,200 square-foot home, now under construction. The primary building material is preformed "grids" of a product called Ener-Grid. It is made of 86 percent recycled Polystyrene and 14 percent Portland cement. The grids... Full story

  • Three fires in six days

    Eric Dolson|Updated Jun 4, 1996

Sisters/Camp Sherman RFPD firefighters were mopping up after their third house fire in a week on Monday, June 3. The home of Bill and Mickey Duehren on Camp Polk Road was totally destroyed. Unlike the fire on May 1 (see story on page 1), the Duehrens escaped the flames without injury. A few items from the back of the house were saved. (The second fire on Saturday, June 1, was an intentionally set "burn-to-learn" on Pine Street to remove a home near the site of a new subdivison.) Bill Duehren believes the fire started in a... Full story

    Updated Jun 4, 1996

Telephone callers to most of Oregon must soon begin changing their dialing habits as the state's new 541 area code comes on- line June 30. After eight months of "permissive dialing" to the region that was assigned the state's new area code, callers must begin using 541 to reach phone numbers outside of northwestern Oregon. The Oregon Public Utility Commission (OPUC) is encouraging all telephone customers to begin dialing the 541 area code and to reprogram or modify their telecommunications equipment before June 30. Some of... Full story
