Pastor Rodger Hall. photo provided Pastor Rodger Hall of Christ's Church of New Beginnings in Sisters died after a horseback riding accident on Wednesday, June 2. According to his son Shane Hall, the pastor, a Western riding enthusiast, was riding at his daughter's home in Sunriver when the horse crow-hopped, snapping Hall back in the saddle; the horse's hindquarters may have struck Hall in the back of the neck. A Pacific Northwest rattlesnake. photo by Jim Anderson Five-year-old Jacob Gurney of Squaw Creek Estates hasn't been around long enough to learn about rattlesnakes. Last Tuesday at about 9 a.m. there was one in his backyard. Jacob thought it was a stick and he tried to pick it up. The rattlesnake bit Jacob on the thumb. A couple of weeks back I wrote an article about West Nile Virus (WNV) that contained a few suggestions on what to do to avoid contacting the dreaded illness. Last Friday two more pianos arrived in town, donated by Jim Hanson of Bend. Hanson does everything related to pianos -- restoration, moving and storage, rentals, tuning, etc. Hanson donated the two baby grand pianos to the Jazz Festival's "Keys for Kids" program. Mary Richards finishes a quilt. photo by Jim Mitchell Forty-five years ago, Mary Richards became a nun. Although no longer part of the convent, she is returning to Lacrosse, Wisconsin, to reunite with 19 of her classmates. She chose to drive because of the quantity of baggage she is carrying with her: 19 quilts, one for each classmate. Planning ahead, she has been making quilts for two years to present to her classmates. Last week she displayed the quilts at St. Edward the Martyr Catholic Church in Sisters. Friends drifted... Steve Swisher has signed on to become interim superintendent at Crook County School District. "The school board in Crook County ratified a contract today (Monday, June 7)," Swisher said. Swisher said both he and the school board have expressed interest in a more long-term position. Swisher, who retired as Sisters Schools Superintendent last year due to pension considerations, said he was thrilled to land a job in Central Oregon. - A man reported seeing a ball of fire falling from the sky north of Sisters ("goodness, gracious..."). - Deputies cited six local teens for being minors in possession of alcohol at a party in the woods south of Sisters. - One driver was cited in an accident at Barclay Drive and Highway 20.
