  • Sisters Eagle Airport project underway

    A $750,000 upgrade to Sisters Eagle Airport is now underway. Airport owners Benny and Julie Benson, airport manager Hobbs Magaret, Sisters City Councilor Wendy Holzman and Deschutes County Commissioner Alan Unger gathered at the edge of the runway on Friday, March 15, to break ground on the project, funded 80 percent through the Oregon Department of Transportation's ConnectOregon IV grant and 20 percent through private funding.   • Brush fire a sign of the season

    The Cloverdale Rural Fire Protection District responded to the first brush fire of the year on Thursday, March 14. A field fire grew out of control in the 18000 block of Highway 126. Although attended, the reported 10-mph winds in the afternoon quickly blew the fire out of control. The temperature was 62 degrees at the time.   • City's bid process draws a challenge

    The city's bid review committee made their final recommendation Thursday on the competitive bid for the $250,000 Hood Avenue/Fir Street water-line project. The winning bid came from Robinson & Owen Heavy Construction of Sisters at $253,702. The lowest bid was from Bartels Construction of Powell Butte at $229,732, roughly $24,000 lower. The city has a point system for bidding that includes other criteria than bid price, which can mean that a higher bid can win a contract.   • Local option passes in a landslide

    Sisters voters approved five more years of local option taxes by an overwhelming 79 percent majority last week. The five-year levy that passed on Tuesday continues the 75-cents-per-$1,000 of assessed value funding that the voters first approved in the year 2000. The owner of a home assessed at $172,024 (the average assessed value of residential property in the district) will continue to pay $129.02 per year.   • Fire volunteers host Easter egg hunt

    Children from infant to 11 years of age are invited to participate in the annual Easter Egg Hunt co-sponsored by the Sisters-Camp Sherman and Cloverdale fire departments. The event will take place on Easter Sunday, March 31, at 1 p.m. at the adjoining Sisters Creekside and Three Sisters Overnight parks, regardless of weather.     The Outlaws kicked off their season with an 8-2 victory at home against Madras on Tuesday, March 12, and three days later tallied a 14-7 victory at home against Summit.     Temperatures in the mid-60s welcomed the Outlaw track and field team to the annual Mountain View Icebreaker and made the meet more of a sweat-maker than an icebreaker.     The Outlaws boys tennis team lost 6-2 at home against Redmond on Monday, March 11, in their first match of the season, but three days later swept the Crook County Cowboys at Black Butte Ranch. Although the Outlaws lost their match to Redmond, half of the matches went to a tiebreak. Sisters tallied tie-break victories in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.     The boys golf team opened conference play at the Tokatee Golf Course on Friday, March 15, under perfect weather conditions; sunshine, no wind and temperatures in the mid-60s. Sisters took first place with a team score of 376. Sweet Home was runner-up at 380 with Cottage Grove just one stroke back at 381.     The boys lacrosse team started their season strong with a 6-5 win at Sheldon on Monday, March 11. Sheldon (6A) is traditionally a tough opponent, and that proved out in Monday's matchup.
