The City of Sisters plans to start charging the Sisters Library rent for its facility on the corner of Main Avenue and Spruce Street. At a work session last week, the city council instructed city administrator Barbara Warren to send a letter to the library informing library staff that that rent would be charged after one month's notice. A fire that started in a stump in Tollgate Thursday afternoon, June 15, is considered suspicious, according to Deschutes County Sheriff's Office reports. The blaze apparently started in a stump near the intersection of Conestoga and Lariat streets at about 2:30 p.m. It quickly spread to the surrounding brush, burning an approximately 50-foot circle around the point of origin before a fire crew doused the flames. Horses may no longer be welcome in the Tollgate subdivision west of Sisters. An ad-hoc committee formed by the Tollgate Property Owners' Association Board of Directors recently proposed phasing out all horses within Tollgate. The committee sent a letter and survey to Tollgate homeowners a few weeks ago, asking for their opinions on the matter. Representative Ben Westlund thinks he has a way to significantly boost funding for Oregon's public schools. Westlund floated the idea of taxing the gross receipts of non-Oregon companies at a meeting with parents, students and teachers in Sisters last week. He thinks such a tax could realistically raise as much as $3 billion dollars. A Deschutes County Grand Jury indicted Steven Gage of Sisters on 22 additional counts of sex abuse and criminal mistreatment on Friday, June 16. Gage, who operated Royal Haven Equestrian Center for Girls near Sisters, had been indicted previously on 45 counts including rape, sexual abuse and criminal mistreatment.
