Redevelopment could begin at Suttle Lake Resort as early as summer 2000. Proposed changes to the resort include a new 10,000-square-foot lodge and 12 cabins that would replace the existing campground. A revised master plan and a new environmental assessment (EA) were released last week after the Sisters Ranger District received considerable public comment on the original plan, released in April 1998. According to the Sisters Ranger District, community members said the original resort proposal "consisted of too much... Full story
Two subdivisions proposed for Sisters won preliminary plat approval from the Sisters Urban Area Planning Commission Wednesday, June 16, after the developers addressed concerns about traffic and impact on surrounding properties. Rick Francis and Mark Ford, developers of Coyote Springs off Locust Street near Buck Run, offered a scaled-back plan for the subdivision, reducing the number of lots from 56 to 46. The original plan had raised planners' eyebrows with some lots designed... Full story
The brightest future of the Sisters School District may be not having a "Sisters" school district. An idea is percolating among Central Oregon school superintendents that opening up enrollment among the Bend, Redmond and Sisters schools may improve education. According to Steve Swisher, superintendent of Sisters schools, a family might want certain programs that are only available in an adjacent district. Or it might be more convenient for a family to have a child in a school close to where the parent is employed. "If... Full story
Caroline Lucas, the new owner of Sisters Market, made the best of a bad situation last week when a large freezer defrosted, leaving about $1,000 worth of food in danger of going to waste. Lucas contacted the Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank and Kiwanians David Hiller and Cal Allen responded, collecting about 75 pounds worth of frozen dinners. "We couldn't take it all because we've only got one refrigerator," Hiller said. According to Hiller, Chris Anderson, who manages the food... Full story

Curry entered the December 12 Hawaii event to celebrate five years of remission from acute myelogenous leukemia. She will represent the Leukemia Society of America's (LSA) Team in Training program, hoping to raise $7,000 to support LSA's efforts to find a cure for cancers of the blood. "I've never done anything like this before, and I thought that it would be a great way to celebrate and give back for... Full story
* * * To the Editor: Recently, a judge ruled that the 1972 Crossroads CC&Rs (covenants, codes and restrictions) amendments are invalid but that the 1972 CC&Rs as originally written are valid. Even today, violations of the CC&Rs are occurring as they have in the past. The Holders attorney would be able to provide a list of these infractions. The meeting which was held at the Sisters Fire Hall (then dismissed by the attending board members because they didn't approve of the Holders' attorney being present) would have offered... Full story
A dog chases and bites a jogger in Sisters. A Rottweiller and a pit bull come off their property and pull a woman's dog through her pasture fence, mauling it badly enough to require veterinary attention. Dogs bark all night, dogs run loose, dogs are left to twist themselves around posts on short chains, driving themselves -- and everyone within earshot -- crazy. There seem to be a lot of folks around Sisters who just shouldn't have dogs. Maybe it's too much work, too much responsibility. If you can't provide a dog with a... Full story
Summer has finally arrived with its usual influx of tourists, but the visitor count at the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center is down from 1998. According to chamber manager Mardyth Peterson, businesses in town have also noticed a drop in visitors so far this year. Many attribute the decline in visitor numbers to a long winter and the cold weather that seemed to linger into late spring. The chamber also tracks the number of phone calls received at the visitor center. Phone inquiries are also down from 1998,... Full story
Like the swallows to Capistrano, the Gold Wing motorcycle club returned to Sisters right on schedule for its annual rally June 17-20. Members from chapters throughout Oregon, Idaho, and Washington -- totaling nearly 450 people -- rode into Sisters for the three days of festivities that more than one rider described as "a family reunion." Dennis Fuller, outgoing district director, reported that about half of the participants came from Oregon, with the rest split fairly evenly between Washington and Idaho. One fellow came all... Thomas Allen Meyer, 47, was arraigned on Monday, June 21, on charges of manufacture and possession of marijuana. The arraignment followed Meyer's arrest on May 19 during an IRS-led search for financial records, when local authorities discovered the small grow operation in Meyer's barn. Twelve plants, 24 to 36 inches tall, were seized. According to Deschutes County District Attorney Mike Dugan, Meyer has a history of drug-related convictions going back to 1972. If convicted of the "Level 8" offense resulting from the latest... Full story
