    Iris Tope, 91, of Sisters, passed away June 15, 2010, surrounded by her close family. Iris was preceded in passing by her husband Millard R. Tope on June 14, 2008. Iris was born May 4, 1919 in Liberty, Utah, to William R. and Dora (Moosman) Collings. Iris was married to Millard R. Tope August 18, 1942, in Yuma, Arizona. Iris is survived by her son M. Ray Tope, Vancouver, Washington and daughter Terri K. (Tope) Kemp, Bend. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 16... Full story

  • Carp at Malheur are harbingers of starlings everywhere

    The story published in The Nugget two weeks ago about the carp at Malheur NWR leaves one with the impression that the "Good Old Days" of birding at Malheur are gone forever. Not so for several species for several reasons - for now. While the carp are a serious threat to the ecosystem of many waterfowl and aquatic species, many other birds are doing well - for now.
