Firefighter trainees took their schooling from the classroom to the woods near Sisters last week, gearing up for the peak summer fire season. Some 61 new Central Oregon wildland firefighters from state and federal agencies completed a week-long training session in Sisters. Visitors to Balancing Rocks near Lake Billy Chinook will now have to walk a bit to visit this unique geological site. Work to protect the Balancing Rocks area is scheduled to begin late this month, according to Project Manager Michael Keown of the Sisters Ranger District. The driver of a Redi-Mix cement truck escaped serious injury when his truck flipped over on Highway 20 at Paradise Alley east of Sisters on Tuesday, June 20. According to Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office reports, 39-year-old David Brown of La Pine was driving the 1999 concrete mixer truck westbound on Highway 20 on Tuesday afternoon when the truck drifted off onto the shoulder of the road.
