Dozens of golfers smeared on the sunscreen and hit the green grass of Aspen Lakes on the hottest day of the year to date last Sunday, in the 20th annual Outlaw Open. Aspen Lakes donates the use of the course for the 18-hole team tourney, which is a key fundraiser for Sisters High School athletic programs. Principal Joe Hosang cites that kind of community support for Sisters' high statewide ranking for school athletics (see related story, page 1). "It's principally, in the... Full story
Sisters High School is well known in the state as a school that perennially fields competitive sports teams. A story in last week's Oregonian newspaper reported that the Outlaws ranked highly in a study about schools that are considered best for high school athletes. This study was not focused on winning and losing, but more on whether the school met other criteria considered to be indications of a strong athletic program. Through surveys from parents and students and other research, the study by Niche.com looked at... Full story

Firefighters report eight new fire starts from lightning in the Sisters area. Most fires are out, but the public should be aware of two fires burning tonight. One fire is burning above Highway 20 near Santiam Pass and is very visible. Approximately 20 people are working on the fire, including two hand crews and six rappellers. Firefighters expect to have the fire, burning in heavy brush within an old fire scar from the 2003 B & B fire, contained this evening. The other fire (#341) also is burning in a fire scar from the B &... Full story

To the Editor: After reading the article in the June 21 Nugget about the Coles purchasing the 345-acre Patterson Ranch, I was so happy to see they were not going to cut up the ranch for development, but leave it as-is for hay. Having lived on and worked the 1,000-acre "Old Macedo Ranch" in Danville, California, producing cattle and red oat hay, it breaks my heart to see beautiful ranches cut up and homes there instead. I was happy to find the Forest Service had made our old place part of Mt. Diablo State Park so no building... Full story

As the sun begins to set earlier in the evening and the days become warmer there are many beautiful objects to see here in the night sky. The month of July brings us warm nights with many exciting stars, planets, and deep-sky objects to discover. One of the best constellations to see in the July sky is Hercules. Many have heard the name, however they may not know it is the fifth-largest constellation, and it fills 1,225 square degrees in the sky. In Greek mythology Hercules was the son of Zeus and Alcmene. Hera (Zeus' wife)... Full story

Blue Pine, sought after by designers for its dramatic look, gets its hue from a fungus that develops in the logs once the tree has died. Master craftsman Dan Coker, who recently opened the doors to his Blue Pine Designs showroom on East Cascade Avenue in Sisters, has been fascinated with blue pine since he was a kid. "The blue streaks are caused by a fungus that the insects introduce into the tree. The unique coloration doesn't affect the wood's strength or durability," Coker... Full story
I was among those who thought the roundabout was a good idea. I still do-they work-though some of the motoring theatrics I observed this weekend might cause one to have legitimate second thoughts. For a moment, tourist-watching from my favorite surveillance hidey-hole in the Ray's parking lot, the roundabout sounded like lower Manhattan, horns ablaze, tires squealing, and wild oaths being issued, as touring cars bristling with kayaks and canoes and jammed full of vaping... The Sheep Springs Fire is burning less than a mile northeast of Sheep Springs Campground and roughly a half-mile west of Forest Road 12 in the Metolius Basin. The blaze is burning in an area previously burned by the B & B Fire in 2003, in an area predominantly covered in standing dead trees. Due to the extremely hazardous nature of the incident's location, firefighters will use indirect strategies to contain the fire, primarily from roads. This will minimize the need for firefighters to engage directly with in the fire in... Full story
