  • Nordell sets record in endurance race

    Andrew Loscutoff|Updated Jun 28, 2016

Feats of endurance and fortitude are not unfamiliar to Ashley Nordell, a Sisters woman who competes in ultra-endurance trail running. Nordell's most recent race, the Bighorn 100, tested her for over 21 hours, navigating rugged Wyoming trails. High altitude, a rough start, and tough course conditions did not stand in her way; Nordell won the race, and came away with a course record. Nordell, a mother of two toddlers, finds herself training with the philosophy of quality... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 06/29/2016

    Updated Jun 28, 2016

To the Editor: I live a short distance north of the north end of Runway 2 at Sisters Eagle Airport and am very aware of flight traffic generated by airport operations. I, like many, enjoy the solitude offered by our Sisters Country environment. Particularly sitting on my deck watching the occasional doe and fawn grazing in Indian Ford Meadow. I have read the many negative letters and opinion pieces about airport operations recently published in The Nugget. And, I have previously expressed my own concern for safe flight operat... Full story

  • Rebelling against the rebellion

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Jun 28, 2016

The Blue and the Gray. North versus South. The American Civil War is usually portrayed as a regional conflict pitting two halves of the country against each other in a bloody conflict over slavery and states' rights. The Southern states seceded from the Union to protect and assert their sovereignty, led by a slave-owning class determined to protect the cotton economy. They formed the Confederate States of America and defied the government of Abraham Lincoln, who sought to... Full story

  • Running commentary

    Charlie Kanzig|Updated Jun 28, 2016

Olympic track and field trials are in our backyard starting Friday. I sat down with Tate Metcalf, owner of Sisters Athletic Club and former coach of Ashton Eaton -reigning Olympic champion and world record-holder in the decathlon - to get his take on Eaton's approach to defending his title at the Olympic trials, which run July 1-10 at Hayward Field in Eugene. "First, he has to qualify," said Metcalf, laughing. "A lot can go wrong over the two days and 10 events of the decathlon, and even the world champion can have an event... Full story

  • The big identity party

    Craig Rullman|Updated Jun 28, 2016

Commentary... The continued balkanization of the United States into identity groups, travelling companies of grievance theatre, and the culture of self-loathing we are now widely and actively nurturing isn't doing us any favors. One cannot, it seems, insist on being idealized and set apart as special for various reasons while at the same time decrying a lack of unity in the plurality. That's cognitive dissonance. It seems to be the pervading influence of our time, and it is pr... Full story

  • Orlando: What do you say to the kids?

    Edie Jones|Updated Jun 28, 2016

All of us were shocked with horror at the killings in Orlando. Something few adults could ever imagine, much less our kids. What do you tell them? How do you explain something so unimaginable? The first rule of thumb when something like this happens and they are aware of it is to tell the truth. Keep in mind what your kids are ready for and can understand. The fact that it was a "gay bar" is unimportant until a child is old enough to understand about homosexuality. The fact that a very unhappy person felt the only thing they... Full story
