To the Editor: When I was mayor of our small town, one thing I clearly remember being told from conferences and meetings is that every city has the same problems, it's only a matter of scale. So I find it interesting and similar that Sisters is experiencing the same thing as Benton County. A minority wants to build a paved path from Albany to Corvallis. The controversy is that it needs to cross private property of generational farmers. The fight is bitter and I empathize with the landowners because wherever there are people... Full story

Hooves pound out muffled thunder in the fine, soft dust of the sage flats east of Sisters. A galloping horse, flowing smooth as a breeze across the steppe bears down, its rider swiveling in the saddle, nocking an arrow to a short recurved bow. Twang! Hiss! Thunk! An arrow flies and slams into a round target as the horse and rider swirl past. Again. Again. Arrows fly and slice into their targets, in a martial spectacle that dates back to the ancients. This is the scene at Holm... Full story

A torrid heatwave has shifted into high gear. It broke at least seven June record highs in the Northwest, and weather forecasts indicate that it will extend through early July. With record temperatures in Central Oregon, it is important to keep your pet in mind when it comes to keeping cool. Summertime may be the time for walking and playing in the sunshine with Fido, but unfortunately your furry friend has a much harder time keeping cool than you, especially when temperatures are on the rise. Be mindful of the heat and keep... Full story

When staff and art committee members were looking for the perfect painting to be featured in a large space in the new Lakeside Bistro at Black Butte Ranch (BBR), they knew where to turn. After less than one month, Sisters City Councilor Bill Hall resigned his position last week, citing undue levels of stress imposed by a contentious civic climate in town. "I felt that if I stayed on it would have negatively impacted my... Full story
This is a great time of the year for wildflower viewing. However, due to the poor snow year, blooms are occurring earlier than ever; so, there is no time to waste if wildflowers are an interest of yours. Few places have more to offer in the wildflower arena than Cone Peak Meadows. Among wildflower enthusiasts, Cone Peak is well known; but, for the casual wildflower observer, it may be off the radar. The trail is 35 miles west of Sisters on Highway 20 and is easily accessed on... Full story

Operating in conjunction with the Sunriver Nature Center,... Full story
