  • Illegal burn causes brush fire in Sisters

    An illegal burn at a rented residence at 69050 McKinney Butte Rd. in Sisters sparked a brush fire on Saturday that quickly blew up into a four-acre blaze that could have gotten completely out of hand. “It almost did (get out of hand),” said Sisters Camp Sherman Rural Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Dave Wheeler. “We were very lucky.” The fire, which was still under investigation on Monday, July 3, was apparently caused by an escaped spark from a burn barrel or fire pi... Full story

  • Volunteers organize 1,200 quilts for show

    Quilts appear as if by magic on the storefronts of Sisters on the morning of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. That “magic,” however, is actually the result of a three-week effort by some 75 volunteers who sort and assign locations to the 1,200 quilts entered in the show.   • Growth puts pressure on sewer and water systems

    Sisters’ population is growing every year and the city’s water and sewer systems are not expected to withstand the increased growth unless something is done to expand the existing infrastructure. The sewer system is predicted to reach capacity in three years.     • A little boy found a $20 bill at the gem show and turned it in at the Sisters sheriff’s substation. • The sheriff’s office received numerous calls about a woman sleeping by the highway.     A Sisters woman was charged with fourth-degree assault after she allegedly hit her sister and a male friend in an altercation over where to eat. According to Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office reports, the woman was riding in the back seat of a car going from Sisters to Bend on June 27.   • Lightning hits Black Butte and sparks fires

    Five lightning strikes caused small fires on Black Butte Monday evening, July 3. According to the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center in Prineville, there were 24 total “incidents” or fires caused by lightning in Central Oregon as a result of a storm that brewed up around 7 p.m. and lasted until about 9:30 p.m. The storm brought rain and hail in some areas.   • City Hall construction is well underway

    The outerwalls went up on the new City Hall this week and the 9,000 square foot building is slated to be finished by mid-December. The new building, which occupies the space where Sisters Middle School used to be, will be located next to the library and the school administration building.     The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) recognized local volunteer crews that pick up litter on Central Oregon state highways at a luncheon in Bend on June 24.   • Public to weigh in on four-wheelers in the forest

    Officially, it is announced as a public review of travel management on public lands. In reality, it is a major effort by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to seek public comment on how much and where motorized use recreation should be allowed on public lands.     Father Richard Ley (pronounced Lee) is the new priest at St. Edward the Martyr Catholic Church in Sisters.
